HI,
Myself and a friend are currently wishing to purchase two (2) RANGER RCI-2995DX Base Station Radios and would like to hear from anyone with feedback to a few questions we have spinning around in our heads on this side of the pond.
(London - England)
First off, which radio shop should we purchase from in the USA??? We don't want to get Stuffed with exhorbidant shipping fees or buy any Radios that have had the Hell 'Tweaked or Peaked' out of them.
Secondly, since 'Reading the News' here in the Copper forum, it would seem the 2995DX has Signal meter issues, unreliable RF amplifier stages (needs additional Fans for cooling) and poor FM RX qualities, the latter being a BIG No-No as FM is the prefered & only 'Legal' Mode of operation here in England on CB.
Currently we are building a 10m FM Repeater (almost finished) and will be using the 2995DX as our Base Radios for operating into our Repeater, since the 2995DX has CTCSS to access our 'Box' seemed a good choice??.
Myself (TimeSlice) and my Friend are both Full Class A Licence Amateurs with 16+ years each of operating Full HF and CB, we are looking for a decent 10-11-12m Basestation and wonder if you chaps have any input on this matter??

The 2995 doesn't have CTCSS built in.
RCI has posted instructions on their site about how to install a universal CTCSS module in their radio, but you could install that device in nearly any radio.
If you have an existing HF rig that has FM I'd just use that. Get the factory tone board and enjoy. Even if you don't have an existing HF rig, you might consider spending about what you're willing to spend on the 2995 for a used rig that has FM and tone capability already built in. |

Buy your radio from Copper guys! They have the best prices and they match there competitors. Also you get a warranty from copper. Since you need an FM rig I can't help much. FM is a mode I never have used except just to see how it sounds on my own rig. Never have owned any RCI radios but I hear they are really good in performance and qaulity. We will certainly give copper a try, we have bought lots of equipment in the past but none from copper, so it will be a good indication of how USA/UK business works.

I run a RCI 2995Dx base and the S-meter
thing is no big deal and i never had any
problem with unreliable RF amplifier
stage problems. I run a fan kit, but, i
would run it on any high Amp radio to extend
its life. Do not talk on FM, so, not aware
of any problems. Not familar with Ham, so,
can't answer anything there.

the only reason my amp board burnt up is cause my son locked the keydown and the switch box was set to a unuseable antenna with high swr ! 45 mins+ it melted the amp down but the radio is still working good !
if i had only one radio to pick out for another new one it would be the 2995DX or mag 257 !
but its my 1/2 cent !
good luck on finding the radio you need or want as my wife would say ! LOL

The only problem I have found with the 2995DX is the FM. Mine is an outstanding radio, but listening to CB via AM and switching over to FM you can still hear just about everything that is going on on AM.
Other than that, that are one bada-- radio. I don't see why anyone would need anything else for 10,11 and 12 meters. |
