Mikefromms,

The Cobra 2000 GTL was a good base radio when it came out back in the 70's.

I doubt you will find many members that still have a working one around that they are using.

They draw a big price for a good one on the internet auction sites from people who want the older base radio.

Now it is very hard to find a good one still in working condition.

Are you confusing this with the Cobra 200 GTL DX Mobile radio?

anyone who heard CEF410 on the nets today heard my 2000gtl.
yes, they are hard to come by in good condition, but just like an old pickup truck; they can be restored to better than new condition.
as far as comparisons to other radios go; its been debated on here ad nauseum.
i will say that i am VERY happy with the way my radio sounds on the air and that the ears are top notch IMO. (i also think they are the coolest LOOKING base station around.)

well knock them if you want, ive been into 2517's all other good bases. unhappy, ended up buying 9- 2000's to get the one i wanted, sold one the other day, have myself down to three and hanging on. nothing better in my opinion. did pick up a president grant a couple of days ago, another great radio, did not like the newer lt. but to each his own, did have a new president madison, same as the grant.. brain damage, your silver eagle has probably just got an old, worn out element in it. try replacing that first.(if you can find one!)

as for the 2000gtl, DO THIS!!! IT WILL WORK WONDERS!!! IT WILL NOT HURT YOUR RADIO!!!
replace TR14 with an NTE107 or 2SC2999.
this will give you a 6db increase in your s/n ratio. (better receiver)

Dinker1,

Somehow I am confused here.

I read all of the above posts and NO ONE has posted anything knocking the Cobra 2000GTL.

The Cobra 2000GTL was a good radio when it was produced as was the Tram D201 and the Stoner and many other radios that were produced during the same time frame.

Different people like different radios and still have and use them but no one was knocking them.

And Matt you sounded GREAT on the CEF Nets today, LOUD & PROUD just wish I could of had the beams up and working so I could have tried to connect with you.

I just bought a "bone stock and never hacked" 2000 GTL built in 1991 for $17.00 at a local swap meet. It came with the matching speaker and it looks like new. I love this radio and always wanted one. The only mod I'm going to do to it is the clarifier as I'm generally on SSB. sb106

Well darn, deals like that don't often happen, if everything is working on the radio it's worth upwards to $500.00 on a certain Internet auction.
Airplane-1 also got a great deal on his Cobra 2000GTL.

Dave, You could have taken the 2000 off the auction when you were seeing that the bids weren't going any higher. And then put it back on at a later date with a reserve price.

Hi there,
I just bought a Cobra 2000GTL.
I have a Cobra 135XLR that I have really wanted since seeing it in Len Buckwalter's CB RADIO HANDBOOK when I was a kid, I also stole the handle "leakey bucket" from the book too.
I really love the CB's and the antenna's and cant wait for the skip to come back since it's really dead here in Chilliwck BC on the air.
The other day I acidently fried my 135 and I was at a fellow CBer's place pouting and he pointed at a buy and sell that came free in the paper that day only.
I looked under cb stuff and 1 ad had a cobra base ssb and a base ant, mobile ssb and mag mount all for 300$
I phoned and a 78 year old gentleman answered and I asked what radio it was, and he said "COBRA 2000" !
I said how much for the radio and he said if I come take the antenna down for him I could have it for $125.
I was there in 40 mins and he showed me the radio, in mint shape.
I went and took the antenna down, a 5\8 radshack, and he ended up throwing it in for a extra 15$ !!
He said he's goin ham radio....
So to say I'm happy would be an understatment.
I put the swing mod in and the npc mod from this site and it works so good it's really a miracle of amazment how smooth that mod is, the tone knob is now my carrier which goes 0-13 watts I dont wanna go too high even to test but the swing from any setting is insane, and the boot loves it.
I can run my boot on high and it's not a problem since my carrier can be as low as .5 w
Let's just say the Shooting Star 225 gives me 3 s-units with swing to 30+ 60 miles away.
Thats with a Turner +3
I also used the speaker switch for plus\minus 1 channel and ANL sw is for below CH 1 NB sw is 605 and above and both sw's are 445 and up
Also* I added the pa switch for Channels 41-44 which not alot a radios have, and all the old timers used to sit on 42 up here.
I also use 3 computer power supplies to power my boot, all 5 volts positive to negative.
Works great
Hope to hear you all one day, 73's

wow! thats quite a deal!

very cool. now you should come join us in the yah00 group "the mod" check it out.
its all about radios like the 2000.

i havent forgotten about your 135 though. i have my sams right in front of me and i'll post something in a bit.
good luck with the 2000.
try this:
replace TR14 with a 2SC2999 or NTE107, retune L4, L5, and L6.
put the transistor you just removed (2SC1674) in place of TR19.
this will improve the receiver performance by a noticable ammount.
for more swing, replace R194 with a 1N4003 diode, cathode towards the audio IC.
matt
