Is there a modification to unlock the clarifier on the new RCI 2995DX. Every radio I have owned has had this modification and I like the transmit to move with the receive on a radio. Thanks |

WHY? You have a vfo. There is no reason to do this mod on a radio with a vfo. On a Cobra 148 , or similar radio I can see it because you are stuck with 10 kc jumps, unlocking the clarifer on one of those allows you to slide several kc either way. Use your vfo if you want to change tx, but leave the clarifer alone. |

My experience with opening the clarifier of the Rangers is this, it works ok on SSB, but the Mods I have tried, splits the TX and RX on AM, and enough its noticable, about 2.5 kHz. There might be one that doesn't do this, as I haven't tried one in a couple years. But here's something to think about, the VFO moves the TX and RX by 100 count jumps, this gets you close. The stock clarifier moves the RX only, if you tune it any or don't know where 'dead center' is, you have a split TX and RX. If you are listening to someone on SSB, tune him a little with the clarifier, then talk to him, you will sound 'off' a little to him, he then 'tunes' you, and maybe his radio moves TX and RX, you then start waltzing across the band. I think they should have just left the clarifier off the radio, or either made it move RX and TX from the factory, like the AR 3500. Use the VFO for tuning on SSB and you will get close enough so they can understand you, but if you move you RX only with the clarifier, you will probably sound like donald duck to the other party. I bet when you tune someone with the VFO, you then reach for the claifier, because he doesn't sound "just' right, when you do that, you are split. I know, this is nit-picking, and if your just talking DX, who gives a rats-ass if your off a little, but if you sit and gab with some locals on SSB, I like for everyone to sound like 'AM', and I don't like to ask someone if I 'sound' ok. If everyone has a good 'locked' together TX and RX, that want happen. If there is a good fix for the Clarifier on the Ranger, I would prefer it opened. That's just my opinion. |
