Hey guys I am thinking of setting up a base station , and I am looking for a little advise. I just want something to talk to locals to on AM and SSB. This set up will be placed in my garage , I plan on using a Imax 2000 set at about 40' high. I figure I will need about 50 ' or 60' of coax I think . Which Coax should I use? for a base radio I am in a toss up , I dont know wether to go with a galaxy 2547 or a TR696F or to just buy a cobra 2000 off of ebay. But here is the main thing , My garage is not always heated during the winter , usally it is heated when temps are gonna be below freezing , will the low temps hurt the radio? I am really just looking for some info to lead me in the right direction dont want to waste any money I dont need too. Thanks in advance , Shane

Use the best coax you can afford. At less than 100' you won't pay that much more for better coax and it'll pay off in the long run.

Cobra 2000s are probably the best ever mass produced base CB ever made, but they're all pretty old and many are hacked up so I'd be careful about buying one from an auction.

The 696F is a similar design and I've read that it's a pretty good performer. I've had poor experiences with Galaxy radios in the past so I stay away from them, but some folks really like them a lot. It really depends on what features are most important to you and what radio most closely fits those needs.

Heat shouldn't be an issue with the radio. I've operated radios at less than 0F and aside from taking a while to warm up and stabilize their frequency, they operate just fine.

You didn't mention grounding the equipment so I will. Grounding is important for safety and it should not be ignored. There are lots of posts on the forum about grounding - search for them and you'll find lots of information.

BELEIVE IT OR NOT!!-the galaxy dx2547 & texas ranger 696F base BOTH use the EPT0696-10Z main ranger chassis!! HOWEVER, open both up & check out parts that are missing/different values & you will see that the 696 has an advantage. why in the world would ranger/galaxy do such a thing?? to give me another reason to rag on galaxy, i guess!!!
