I have a Cobra 139 XLR that has mods done to it by a professional tech. It has beed expanded, tuned and peaked.
Some guy said that if it is tweeked and peaked with max power output, that it will ruin power supply and finals will not last long at all.
It does have excellent audio swing and is a loud radio.
I checked this unit on my meter. It dead keys 5 watts at swings to 15 PEP. On AVG power, it stays at a stable 5 watts transmitting or dead key.
I had a Realistic base TRC-490 with the same mods done by the same tech and ran it for 3 years with not a problem.
Is this going to ruin my finals and power supply or is this guy full of it?

He's probably full of it,only galaxys blow their power supplies and finals other bases just mozy along with narry a twitch,THE big thing that gets hammered in all radios except the S-9 is the modulator transistor regulator,in most dual final rigs it is a 7 amp 2sb754.Rather than put a 15 amp TO-3 in galaxy decided to make a complicated circuit, that can't be bypassed,to limit the voltage to the finals to 13 volts, even if you could get the radio to run on 16 volts the driver and finals only see 13 ever. Now if this "some guy" is on here he probably knows what he's talking about.Bigbob

If the 139-XLR is in good condition and looks any where like a new radio, I say keep it. It's a great radio from the past, and they don't make 'em like daddy's radio anymore, and worth a whole lot more than $50.00. I have the mobile companion radio the 138-XLR and I'll not part with it.
