I was fooling with my Kenwood 850 today and tuned down to 20 meters using the internal tuner and to my surprise the Imax did the job! I can hear and get out really good. I got a report of a 5 by 5, not bad on an Imax. My Imax is now over 100 feet in the air and I have a copper wire clamped to the bottom with the wire run to a 8 foot ground rod. I wonder if the tuner in the radio was also tuning that ground wire? Any thoughts?

I'm curious about this too...I just received a TON of ham gear from a family member of a passing ham, and one of the items is a Kenwood 850s w/internal antenna tuner. Anyway, I've always been more of a cber, but finally got my Tech license recently so this all worked out!

Anyway, I've been listening (no TX) to everything from 80 meters to 10 meters on my Antron 99! I'm surprised how much I hear! I plan on putting up a dipole, probably an inverted "v" pretty soon.

Does it make a big difference when you ground the radio, in addition to the antenna being grounded? Another plan of mine to happen soon!

I used the I-Max for the first few months after I passed the genreal last year. I found that the I-Max worked on 10,12, 15, 17 and 20 meters. But it really does a great job on 10 and 12 meters, and does a decent job on 15 meters. I found that though it works pretty well on 17 and you can make contacts on 20 meters, a simple dipole will work much better on those bands. But for 10-15 meters it will do a fine job for you. But honestly where it really shines is on 10, 11 and 12 meters.

Hope this helps

Bob
