hi,
i would like to know if there is a way to add
ch. to a 148 nw/st with the mmb8719 pll chip.
i hear there is and found one mod to do it without changing the chip. is it safe? or do I
have to change the chip to a mb8719 from an older
radio? just want to get the (b) ch.'s that the
fcc left out. the other ch.'s would be nice, too.
thanks

i have never heard of an MMB8719 chip.
if you are referring to the RCI8719 chip, then, as long as there is a 11.3258 crystal in that radio, then the mods for the old style should work.
i have never opened up a 148 nw/st myself to be sure.
the mods are safe if you do them neatly and correctly.

the rci8719 chip is what rci/ranger used when THEY built cobra's & in TR296 & general shermans. mmb8719's were usually in grants. some 148nwst's used 8734's. maybe it WAS changed before? may also depend on what was available at the time, prior to non-modifiable chips being used, etc

The MMB-8719 is factory. I had one those China made Cobra 148 GTL STs for about three weeks and did some research on the MMB-8719 and found that the PLL has to be changed to do the full MB-8719 mods. After finding out the PLL had to changed I got rid of it quick. It was going to cost me more than the radio is worth to change the PLL, I only gave $20.00 to a guy who needed gas money. I thought I did well getting $50.00 for it.

well, i did two different ch. mod's to this radio
(it has the mmb-8719 chip) one was under"cobra 148gtl MMB8719 ch mod (china made)" and the other was "codra 148 NWST channel mod w/MMb8719"
only step 3 was done on the second mod. (pin 10
to ground with a switch) and i used a spdt center
off switch so that pin 10 & pin 12 can not be grounded at the same time. the other two switches
are spst, one sw is cut trace on pin 14 and put the sw in to reconect the broken trace. the other
sw is pin 10 to 11. this mod give ch from 26.815
to 28.045. thanks for everyone's help, i hope this helps someone else too.
