I have 2 seperate 142 gtl's i just bought that each have a quirk... On one it is recieving on the meter but no audio output to internal or extrenal speaker. On the other radio when you turn the volume up past halfway you get a squeal in the speaker, internal or external either one. Any help on either of these would be appreciated.!!!

dakota325, i'll try and offer some ideas to start your troubleshooting, but it would help if you could be very detailed in your discription of your problems.
do you know anything about the history of these radios?
did the "quirk" start after you bought the radios, or was it there when you bought them?
have you tried different mics?
give as much detail as you can, and also include the things you've already tried.

troubleshooting:radio with no sound
start with no mic plugged into the radio.
RF gain fully clockwise, squelch fully counterclockwise. volume at a normal level.

looking at the mic plug on the radio, pin 1 is the bottom right pin, and they are numbered consecutively from there, the next pin up is 2 the top middle is 3 and top left is 4 and bottom left is 5.
using a piece of wire or an alligator clip, short pins 2 and 3 together.
any noise from speaker?
yes? your mic is no good or wired incorrectly.
pin 1 is audio, 2 is shield, 3 is recieve, 4 is switched common, and 5 is transmit.
no?
check your audio IC for these voltages. the audio IC is located on the right hand side of the PC board (radio facing you) and is bolted to the side.
its the one closer to the rear of the radio. IC4 TA7222P.
pin 1 should be 13.8 volts
pin 5 1.84 volts
pin 6 1.85 volts
pin 9 6.79 volts
pin 10 13.13 volts
if any of these voltages is not present or is way off, then replace the audio IC, and check the parts near it to make sure one of them has not gone bad and caused the audio IC to go.

try these steps on both radios.
did you buy both radios from the same person?
i hope this helps, post with the results of your testing.
matt

ummmmm, salty bones, that is the chip i gave the voltages for so he could check it.
im guessing that it worked because every time i try to offer help, and it doesnt work, the person makes sure to post that it didnt work, but when the post lies dead after my suggestion, i figure that the person fixed the radio, and doesnt log onto the forum anymore.
sure would be nice to know that my suggestions worked!
