Hello everyone,
I am looking at a Robyn SB-540D 40channel AM/SSB Base radio from the 70's. It is I think the first micro-processor frequency controlled CB base. The radio is in VERY close to MINT condition. Looks and works like new. My question is this: What is this radio worth? What would be a reasonable price for this radio?
Anyone have any idea I would greatly appreciate it.

I have asked the same question on this forum about old radios. Most of the more knowledgable hams and cbers have told me,"An old radio in any condition is only worth as much as you want to pay for it". Its so hard to determine and I think thats why some of these old radios are put on auction to the highest bidder. I do know that a Robyn is worth your time. Back in the 80's a fellow cber used a yellow Robyn which contained tubes. They have very good audio and transmit well with nice recieve. He was one of the most notorious cb troublemakers in Indy at the time. Robyn is a very well made rig. All the abuse that guy put his radio through like long dead keys and such I still to this day cannot believe how well it performed after that! It finally died when it went flying out his radio room window being dragged by the coax down the street behind a Chevy pickup at about 50 MPH! Antenna came down as well! I bet that radio still worked after that!  73 |

i could never remember the robyn #'s for some reason. the 520d was the 1 i had that was heavily modded, 858 chip, pretty close to washington/madison of that era. the 540d was an extremely nice radio, trying to offer some competition to the dak x & tram d300 in looks, & the cobra bases as well. i think it WAS a better radio then the dak, though i had & used the dak more. more impressive looking to a kid  . didn't have the 540 long enough to mod, it was sold or traded off not long after i got it, probably early 1980 or so. might've been for tires for my truck even  .

It appears this is kind of a rare radio. This one works and looks great. The microprocessor channel control will lose track of where it is once in a while, but there is a reset switch on the back of the cabinet that resets the microprocessor back to the right channel. The information I have found about this radio says this is a normal condition, a result of microprocessor technology being quite new when this was made.
Thanks Pat I got the link to the review. I read it and learned a couple new things about the SB-540D.
On air reports all say the audio is very clear and clean with no distortion or white noise. Just clear, clean full range audio. I like that. I have a Astatic 575-M6 mic on it. (My all time favorite mic) I am thinking this might have a home in my shack, at least for now anyway. . .
