I have an Excalibur SSB and I was wondering if I could get some comments on this radio from anyone that has one or has ever owned one. Thanks

the excalibur base was a redesigned ham international jumbo. the jumbo was 3 band, 1-40 & 2 bands above 40-geared to the SSB operator. the jumbo used a PLL02A IC in a PTBNXXXXXX chassis whereas the excalibur was the precursor to galaxy & used the original ept3600XXX board with the mc145106 IC, used in such things as the dak X, connex 3300, browning mkiva(YUP!), etc.

both radios had pros & cons to them. at the time, there really wasn't much to compare them to, except hybrid HF radios, or the new fully solid state HF radios, which were cost prohibitive except to the most dedicated SSB ops.

never owned a jumbo, excalibur, galaxy base. my 101e was preferred over the other 3, owned by locals, on XMIT on both SSB & AM. i think they got 'louder' signal reports then my 757gxII on AM, but the yaesu was better on SSB. as for receive, i never compared 'em side by side. but it should compare to probably 50% of the export radios floating around today.

Nice looking radios. I prefer the natural aluminum look to the black anodized look that's so popular now.

speaking of this radio...just got one on the bench.
radio turns on, great recive, goes into transmit mode...but no wattage shown on external meter on ant A or B. voltage reg is good...audio chip is good...problem exists on all mode am/ssb/fm/cw. thinking it must be the finals.

oh, with another radio on same channel sitting beside the Ex. and with the Ex. transmiting into a dummy load, faint audio can be heard...barely. gatta be the driver and final right?

final and driver fixed it...2166 with 2166 and 2312 with 1969 works like a charm
