Hi. Just picked up a used washington. Works great. Except it smells like cigarette smoke (Mostly internal). Any idea on how to get rid of cigarette smoke smell from inside a cb case as well as outside? Thanks. |

Wash the case in soapy water, if you can get it off. Or you can use a glass cleaner. Because the radio gets warm when it's on it's going to smell for a little while. Clean it with a cleaner, then run it awhile, then clean it again. It will take time and some elbow grease, but it will fade with time. |

--One time I bought a used six meter amp. off of a guy that was a smoker, so what I did was just let a fan blow on it for several days. I know it doesn't sound like it will work that well, but just by letting a fan blow on the amp. in a NON-smoking environment (I am not a smoker), it will cut down on the smell quite a bit. I also took a damp washcloth and washed the outside of the amp. afterwards as well. Also, just take the cover off the radio and put it in your sink (the COVER, I mean, haha) with some mild dish soap and wash it. That will help quite a bit too, since you know all that smoke came in contact with the cover. You will get rid of much of the smell by doing these simple things. Good luck! |

Maybe two years ago I also picked up a first model Washington, that had a very strong odor of cigarette and a wood burning heated home. I didn't do anything but run the radio and after awhile the odor went away on it's own. I've heard of agents that will take away strong odors, but for the life of me can't remember what they were. Might try some of the room air fresheners that say they will help with taking away household odors.

join the club i to have bought used radios that have a strong smoke smell from a nasty smoker.This is what I do on a nice sunny warm day let the radio sit ouside in the fresh air for lets says 10 hours.Most of them smell will be gone..also its good to wash the outside of the radio and the inside.Get a can of compressed air a blow all the stuff out of the radio outside. |

Clean the front and covers.
Let the inside air out for awhile and smell
will fade. |

No mention of electronics spray cleaners. Shouldn't hurt any of the internals. Just remove the cases and give it several wet 'spray and let dry' cycles. Tilt the radio to the back so the "drippings" don't roll off onto the back of the panel (meter and pots), and do both sides. That stuff has a good way of finding and removing all kinds of goop.... |

allans idea is a good one, not that the others arent.
the cigarrette smoke leaves a film on anything it lands on.
when the parts heat up, the film starts to burn away, and you smell the by-product.
simple green diluted with water is the best to clean the chassis with. it will leave no film if you dilute it enough.
take both covers off the radio, and all the knobs.
knobs can be soaked in the solution and scrubbed with an old toothbrush.
hold radio at an angle that will allow any overspray to run down off the edge of the PC board and onto a towel you have set down.
cover the back of the meter and channel selector with some T.P. (spray the channel selector separately, while turning to clean it)
using only a real contact cleaner (not WD40!)
wash the PC board with the spray. go ahead and use it like you would carb cleaner.
just be sure to have the radio unplugged, and dont turn it back on again until all of the contact cleaner has evaporated.
while you're in there; spray inside the backs of the pots, and switches while manipulating them.
that should do the trick.

Matt's right about WD-40. All it does is dry to a hard shellac. WD stands for water dispersant. The oily carrying agent in it does lossen nuts, but after it evaporates, it acts as a sealer. Was used back in the day ('60's) originally for sealing distributor caps and wires from moisture. Company made a fortune advertising this to lubricate and penetrate. I've seen many hunting rifles glued shut with the stuff... |

Allan is right. I would use parts cleaner in a spray can that has the little brush attached. Crackshot suggested febreeze, thats good stuff so you may give it a shot. Watered down windex works good for nicotene on the exterior of the radio. If all possible stay away from radios with nicotene all over them. Its real bad and in my opinion just destroys them. Mics suffer major damage from nicotene smoke in short time. Smokers should keep their gear covered up and never smoke while talking on the radio! I smoke so I made nice leather covers for my mobile stuff! |

409 spray cleaner works great on case and outer chassis. The inside use electronics spray cleaner and wash real good and let cleaner evaporate before using. Use ORANGE PLEDGE TO SHINE UP CASE AND RADIO SMELLS AND LOOKS GOOD.

I have one of those Ionic Breeze type air cleaners, and what I did with a radio that smelled like smoke, was to put the radio and air cleaner in the same room, close the door while I went to work, and believe it or not, after a couple of "purifiying sessions" the smell was gone.
I have done this a couple of times with items purchased off the auction site when they smell like smoke, works every time. |

I have had success removing smoke odor from electronics by spraying the boards with flux remover, then washing the case with Tide laundry soap (it has enzymes in it). Let the case soak in a sink of warm water and Tide overnight. Then rinse well and bake in the oven at very low heat (150 degrees) to completely dry everything to prevent rust.
On the subject of the ionic breeze air purifier... Did you know that running a tube radio does the same thing? When I need to freshen the air in the living room, I leave the 21-tube stereo on all day. Smells GREAT when I get home!!! |

Congrats on the 302! You are going to have a blast with that radio.
Who says no more tubes? You should come to MY house! It is difficult to find anything without tubes here. |

ive picked up radios before that didnt smell like smoke but were plain dusty dirty so i cleaned the outside with simple green and a cotton ball worked fine but wouldnt use it on the inside of a radio

This one time, at band camp, I used dryer sheets.
This works very well inside a computer also. Plus while the computer is running you get a nice air freshner out of it. Plus the anti-static part of it makes it nice also.
Crack it open and put a few inside and enjoy the scent.
Yeah, a defluxer or PCB cleaner would work good too. You just want to make sure you don't get something that once it dries is conductive. Even if you don't see a film from it. Would stink to crank it up and watch the blue smoke roll. That would be worse than the smoke you have now... |

For years I used Eucalyptus Oil to remove smoke residue from radios before working on them. It also removes stickers, decals, gum, and I guess smells nice too. |

What I use can be bought at a parts store but don't get it on plastic. Take the top and bottom covers off and use Lectra Motive on the top and bottom chassis. Use soap and water for the case. Use contact cleaner on all pots and switches. Let dry and put back together and run it. tony/n5jva/cef 259 |

do like AES in cleve. use to do years ago to clean the radios they dip it into a warm bath of vinegar & water it cleans the radio & the smoke oh remove transformer |

I used to use Eucalyptus Oil to remove not only the smell but the residue left by smokers. works wonders.
And yes, if you look around you can get here in the USA
