Here is something weird. Even when I have the green dial a watt switch on it's off position, the variable knob still allows me to lower the power as per the meter. It just happened today. Was not doing this the other day. Also as weird is that when I press the dial a watt switch in and have the knob at maximum, the meter reads 6. With it off and at maximum it reads about 7-8. Weird. I thought the knob was not supposed to work when the dial a watt switch was off. Help. Thanks.

the variable knob is supposed to be removed from the circuit by the dial-a-watt switch being in the 'off' position. it shows that it varies on the amplifiers' meter, but does it show a change on an external wattmeter? i ask that because of the difference in relative output reading on the amp. HOWEVER, different combinations of switches in/out are the 'stages' of output, & that as well may be affecting relative reading.

you're better off leaving the knob for full output, & varying output by the switches. to further tweak, vary the radios wattage or mic gain.

James, In a different post you stated that the most you was getting was 300 to 400 watts I think. With my DX500 and 148 combo I get 300 to 400 watts in dial a watt mode. With it off I get 500+. Do you think that maybe your dial a watt feature is not disengaging to allow full output? Or do you actually get higher numbers watts with it off? Just an idea.

With the dial a watt switch off, the wattage is slightly more than with it in (This is of course with the dial at maximum either with the switch on or off). Odd though that I can still use the dial to lower it even with the switch out. And here is another oddity. When I press the yellow delay button, the wattage drops a little as well. Ever hear of any of these problems? Thanks.

You do know the delay is for SSB right? When you use SSB your wattage should get much higher. Might not be a bad idea to get warranty work done. I have never had a single problem out of any Texas Star amp.

Yes, I know about the SSB delay. What about the other problems? The ability to use the dial even when the switch is off, and even though I can still use the dial, it is actually a little higher wattge at maximum with the switch out.

I don't know James. With the red button on only the dial a watt should not work. Does the green button light up? Maybe it came unhooked during conversion? You should see a major wattage increase with red only. With green on it cuts wattage back about a third depending how hard your drive is. Have you tried a different radio and antenna? If you can't figure it out I would send it back for repair before its too late!

The green button does not light up when it is out. I tried a different antenna and same thing. I have new coax to install. I doubt it, but you never know. The amp works fine, just that the variable still works even with the dial a watt out. Weird thing though is that yes, there is a wattage increase with the switch out. weird.

But what is weird is that for the first week the variable control only worked if i had the green key pressed in. Also, I believe the TS manual said that it should only work if the green button is pressed in. i'll check the manual if I can find it.
