What is the amplifier you have? I am personally not a big fan of those transistors. Usually you will set up your system to key 1/4 of its output. So if your amplifiers says it will do 400 watts you key 100. I would start with two watts dead key and work up from there.

I just don't like the gain. The less gain the less output. Usually in rf transistord gain is rated in decibels. I really like the toshiba 2sc2879, and 2290's. They offer the best gain, and they can be biased for class a, ab. or c. Where as the mrf455 and sd1446 are class C. There not bad by any means, if your just talking AM it should not be a problem. Good luck to ya.

wheelco, turn the radio dead key WAY down, then turn on amp, key up & adjust radio output til amp dead keys about 30 watts. give it some audio & if it swings around 100-120, you're good.

So 1446 pills are class C only? I always thought it was the way an amp is built. I used a 2 pill 1446 amp for a few years with SSB with no problems. Maybe that was why I sounded overdriven to some? It was an auto SSB amp. Now that I think about it......all the best SSB amps I know of contain the Toshiba pills.

Hotwire ....

I run 4 1446's class C for 10 meter fm but ANY transistor can run ANY mode but you will not have the range of drive input on a class c that a linear device will have .....
