I just got my Texas Star 500V amp today from Copper and love it! My question is how many watts can I safely put into it? I have it hooked up to my Magnum S9 deadkeying 5 watts and swinging 20 or so with the top gun modulator off. Is this the correct setting for my radio?

I would suggest not putting any more in than it takes to get around a 150 watt dead key or 1/4 of the pep.

Wally, I would suggest a 2 watt deadkey. 5 watts is probably gonna have to high a deadkey out the amp. I run my mobile DX500 with 2 watt deadkey and 20 watt swing with my 148! I have around 120 dead key and close to 500 watt out the amp. On my base DX500 I use a connex 4800 with 2 watt dead key and 38 watt swing and I get the same results as my mobile setup but MUCH louder. The 500 should be able to take all the S9 has as long as the deadkey is not to high.

hotwire's last sentence is correct.

BOTH Kmt36264 & 'wire are CORRECT! while dx500 will handle what S9 can dish out, turn variable rf output on radio DOWN, turn amp on HIGH, key radio, & adjust variable power on RADIO til amp dead keys 125 or so. it should swing 450 or more

I'm looking for one amp that would be suitable to use for a few of my radios:

a new Lincoln
Alan 9001
Phillipines Cobra 148GTL
Texas Ranger TR696FD1
Magnum S9

Would a Texas Star DX500 be suitable to use with the above radios? None of them are peaked to be screamers. I understand that this amp is big enough to handle the S9 and Lincoln, but is it too big for the 148 and the Texas Ranger?

Also, do you have a recommendation on a power supply to compliment this amp?

Thanks for your help! :}

Bert,

YES!

The Texas Star DX500V would work great with all of the radio's you asked about.

The Texas Star website rates it at 45 Amps at full power.

In our use as a base amp here we use a TRIPPLITE 60 AMP POWER SUPPLY with it.

Hope this help's,

Lon

Good morning Lon:
Thanks! That sure does help. I appreciate the advice.
In the interest of maybe saving a few $$ :-( I take it that a Texas Star DX400V would similarly work fine because it's a 4 pill amp?
What about the Texas Star DX250HDV or the Texas Star DX350HDV? I understand that they're 2 pill amps? Perhaps they're not big enough for the S9 and the Lincoln, but fine for the 148GTL and Texas Ranger TR696FD1?
What do you think?
Thanks,
Bert

Bert,

With the S-9 Sam Lewis (Owner of Magnum International) suggest's using a 4 pill Amplifier like the Texas Star 500 or Similar Amplifier that uses 4 - 2SC2879's and you MUST have the radio adjusted for a Dead Key of 4 watts and NO More than 12 watts PEP.

I have followed his instruction's and never had a problem.

Hope this help's,

the texas star 250hd and 350hd will work with the
cobra 148
texas ranger
the 500 would work with these but being these 2 radios are a lower power radio youll only probaly see about 200 watts pep out of the 500.
id use the 500 for
lincoln
magnum
alan 9000
hope this helps
as stated before no more deadkey than 4watts .usualy 2 watts is all ya need but in some i tried it sounded better with the 4 watt carrier not sure why that was though

does anyone know what the actual amp max draw is for the 500. I have a Pyramid 46 amp supply, could it be used?

Roger, i talked to the guys local here
who all have Texas Star 400 amps.
They use 60 amp power supplies. As it dogged
out there 40 amp supplies.
So, a TS 500 will not fully run on your
power supply.

I drive my Texas Star DX500V with my Cobra 148 and get way more than 200 watts PEP. The 148 like most has been peaked and tuned with a single sc1969 final. The cobra keys 2 watts and swings 8 watts RMS! PEP is about 20 watts. I have a 120 watt dead key and the advertised 500 watts PEP from the amp. SSB on the 148 and PEP is 500 plus! Causing my headlights to dim bigtime! So while on ssb I back it down a bit. Each of the 2879 pills in the amp only need a max of 7 watts pep to work at full output. A 20 watt radio will work just fine and you will get very good results. Running a 40 watt radio into the DX500V will get a bit more out and a little louder audio but not a real huge difference. The most you can get out of the amp is with a drive of 28 watts PEP. All my opinions of course. I now own 3 DX500 amps and this is what I have found from my expirience.

the way the dx500 is built, it will generally see the same output from about 3-8 watts dead key & 15-30 watts swing.

i agree with hotwire, in that while the amp WILL handle more wattage, there is a lower 'point of no return'. if you have variable RF capabilities externally on the radio, adjust for amp dead key around 120 more or less, then adjust mic gain/alc/SSB power for max swing RMS, & you'll probably see 400+ PEP. you may still get 500 or more PEP, but RMS swing won't increase any. the only thing that increases is junk.

I see that the ts500 will be to much with for the ps46 supply but can I run the 500 at like half the power or somewhere like that and use it to get like 300-350 watts? that is all I want for now but I want an amp that I can get more out of when I get a bigger supply.

turn the radio dead key down a bit, & the mic gain down too, to lower the swing from the amp, & then use 1 of the lower power settings on the amp & you'll be fine on the smaller PS.
