I bought the LM-TVXZ TVI filter about 10
months or better ago. It shorted out today
and luckily i caught it before it blew my
finals out of my 2995dx.
Rivets were also coming loose and the thing
just sets there. Into the garbage this thing
goes!

Road_warrior,

Do not throw it out.

In well over 30+ years I have never see or heardof an MTI Low Pass Filter short out unless it had over 1KW or 4 KW depending on the model thrown into it.

I would guess just one of the SO-239's went bad from connecting and un-connecting it.

Easy FIX just install a new SO-239 or replace both of them for under 8 buck's.

I cannot understand how the rivets would come lose if you never move it but even if they do come loose they will not cause a short as they have No contact with the coils mounted on the board inside.

Here are my MTI Filter's I use and the older one 4KW is from the late 60's and still working great as well as the other 6 MTI 1KW ~ LM-TVX2 Low Pass Filter's I have in line.

The MTI TVI Filter's are the best I have ever found or used.

And if you really do not want to keep it SEND it my way as I will install 2 new SO-239's and continue using it.

Hope this help's,

Lon

It quit working. When placed in-line or
like i had it, coming straight out of radio.
It acts like there is no antenna hooked up.
Dead! I tried another double male connector with no luck. Probably something came loose inside.
I will have my friend look at it. Because it's
no good to me this way.

The most that got put into the filter was 150 watts PEP. It never got disconnected a bunch of time either.
Been on radio since i bought TVI Filter.
Today i was during chores in the house and
noticed receive dropped way down on radio like antenna was unhooked. Like i mentioned above i tried a new double male connector to rule
out that possibility. I had it coming straight out of radio. I even tried a jumper on it to place in-line. Still Silence. Hooked a old TVI Filter i had straight out of radio and it worked fine.
I guess short circuited was probably the wrong
word to use. It died...

There's just a few coils inside, pop it open and take a look-see, it could be a simple cold solder joint! I have the same filter and it has worked out for me. Aside from lightning or cold solder not much can go wrong with them :-)

The Filter is fixed, my friend just dropped it off on his way to work.
Bad solder joints within the unit was the cause.

Dale,

A TVI Filter should ALWAYS be connected directly to the Radio via a double male connector.
(NO JUMPERS)

Hope this help's

I only run a 2995dx base with nothing else
in-line. TVI filter is hooked directly into
radio using a double male connector. Then
coax plugs into other end of filter.
My opinion is the less you have in-line, the
less trouble you will have.
But, i do have a question?: For Tech 808 or
whoever wants to answer.
Shouldn't the TVI filter be placed in-line after a Amp??? In my case it is. But, if someone
has a separate amp in-line using a jumper.
What then??? Does it still get placed directly into radio or placed after amp?

Ok, this is out of the ARRL RFI Handbook (Pg 3.7)
If a amplifier is used, the filter should
be installed after the amplifier, between
the amplifier and antenna tuner.
If you install a filter it is imperative that
a low SWR (1.5 to 1 or so) exists on your feedline at the filter. With a high SWR the
filter effectiveness may be reduced. In addition to increased spurious output, high swr can cause filter failure from increased feedline voltage.
My problem was the solder joints. 1:1:1 measured with my filter on my rig. 1:2:1 using high power.

My friend touched up the joints in the
LM-TVXZ TVI filter and it has been working good
since i put it back on radio.
I wouldn't of threw it away Lon...LOL...
Just got upset because i really liked this filter
and figured nothing could be done to fix
it.
