Got a reply from Sam Lewis today on the S-9 radios (40, 80 & 175).

I will not be getting the 175 version but am seriously looking now at the 80 watt version.

Here is what he sent to me.

---------------------------------
The S-9 that is currently available was designed to drive any amplifier having an RF complement of 4x 2SC2879 running push pull parallel in class AB.

As far as the 80 watt radios go, they will match up to an amp that utilizes 8x 2SC2879 (no driver stage).

To consider an amp that would be excited by 175 watts you would have to look at a commercial grade amp using transmitting tubes.

---------------------------------

SO my question to all you who are familiar with amps. What are my options in mobile amps:
4x 2SC2879 amp
and
8x 2SC2879 amp

What would be the realistic results of these DK & PEP?

Thanks in advance for the advice & options available to me and your opinion on what I would be better off using.

Tim

On an average vehicle with at least a 100 amp alternator a 4 pill is about as high as you wanna go. I use the Texas Star DX 500 4x2879 with 100 amp alternator and my charging system is maxed out! 120 dead key 500 watts swing! A custom 4 pill pulls even higher amps!
If I was to install any 8 pill in my car it would be a very expensive install. Alternator upgrade would be a must and most likely a second battery! Also possible RF shielding concerns.
So I recommend Texas Star for commercial amps. The DX 500V for a 4 pill and the DX 1600 for an 8 pill. You also have the option to go custom. Someone else knows customs better than I do.

Hey Sinker,
I run a competition 8 pill(actually 2 2sc2290 X 6 2sc2879)behind my Magnum S9 in my 1994 Honda Accord. I upgraded to a 200amp altinator, added two extra batteries in the trunk, and used 2 gauge welding cable to distribute power to the amp. I get about 1400 Mud Duck squshing watts. Not bad for a little Honda I think.

I think a 4pill amp and your S9 would work nicely in your Dodge truck without you having to upgrade your charging system. If anything you might have to get a bigger battery.
