Don't mess yourself up!

Make sure to discharge the HV supply by touching a post on the top of the tube to chassis ground thru a 1K ohm 5W resistor. One soldered between a cut in half gator lead works well. If the tube cap is ceramic go ahead and remove it then clip it inside to the contact while the draining apparatus is grounded. You CAN do it without discharging if there are ceramic caps but if there's a chage and you accidentally brush it you will wake up across the room or at least on the floor in front of it, immeadetly after jumping in the air and evacuating your lungs via squealing like a school girl.

You WILL squeal, not kidding. Voice of Darwin's wisdom :-)

1861,

YES, you remove the screws and lift board off of the tube's after compressing the springs connected to the top of the tube's.

And when working on any AMP I highly suggest using RUBBER DISH WASHING GLOVES.

This will prevent any oil that may be on your hands or in your skin from getting on the tubes which shorten's the life of the tube and also prevents getting shocked.

Hope this help's,

Lon

Dishwashing gloves are cool for the skin oil thing as are "china gloves" I use white gloves for orchestra conductors because we have an abundance at work :-)

BUT rubber dishwashing gloves do not have the dielectric properties needed to protect yourself from the voltages present in some tube type transmitter amplifiers. Granted I do not know about the voltages in RM's amps but I would not trust my life with them.

Some amps run at voltages that will "reach out and touch you" The rubber at this point is just a solid version of air. NOTHING is safer than making sure the amp is void of all voltage.

I'm not trying to nit-pick or discredit Lon's advice... But it only takes once... Sometimes. You just can't be too safe.
