On the modification article by Firebreather for the DX-959 Galaxy he talks about replacing the stock power amp (2SB754 60Watt 7A) with the 2SB817 100Watt 12A for improved modulation and power stability. In my reaserch I found the 2SB817 from Toshiba to be a 60Watt also. Anyone know anything more here?

www.ortodoxism.ro/datasheets/sanyo/ds_pdf_e/2SB817.pdf

This is why I said my research turned up it was a 60Watt.

Where would be the best place to get the 2SB754 and the 2SA1012-0 or the ECG153 and the ECG583 I want a single source to order them all from. And of course best price and cheapest shipping. =)

2SB754-50V-7A-6OW

2SB817-160V-12A-100W

THESE ARE SPECS FOR TRANSISTORS YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT, SO YOU SEE, THEY ARE NOT RATED THE SAME.

Yes Harve I see by the specs you posted they are not the same in comparison to one another. My first question is this...where did these specs come from?

Second question is, where would be the best place to purchase the following:
2SB817
2SA1012-0
ECG583

Looking for a good source that carries a wide variety of componets at good prices and quick ship times.

Cannon5218,

Do a GOOGLE Search (www.google.com) for:

2SB817
or
2SA1012-0
or
ECG583

And you will find plenty of places that have them in stock and ready to ship.

Hope this help's,

I have Googled till I am blue in the face Lon. I was hoping that someone could reccomend a reputable company to deal with. I have gotten burned a few times by random online retailers and quite frankly I don't want to give a credit card number to any John Doe.

you can find them all at RF parts co.
www.rfparts.com
very reputable, but they have a 25.00 minimum order.

they have the 2SB817 (it IS a 12A 100W device, your source is wrong)
they have the 2SA1012
they have the 1N6263's (which are the ECG583's)
dont forget to buy a 2SC2999 from them for the receive mod.
good luck,
matt

Matt

What do you mean by the 2SC2999 for the recive mod. Is that another replacement for the ECG153? Can you give me a little more info on this mod. I did the 2SB817 with NTE37 swap and the ECG153 with NTE153 swap. Going to try it out on my mobile, the test radio is a Galaxy DX-949. I also ghanged the recive diodes and the noise blanker diodes with Schottky devices. See how it all works out.

About the above link I think there is type-o. The bold heading reads 140V/12A AF 60W Output

If you read on down you will notice the Specifications reads Collector Dissipation 100W

Matt: Good luck on your mods my radio play is being held up a bit due to the passing of my dad. He had been fighting a hard battle with cancer for a while.

DxModulator: Write us up a review on your mods and your findings on that 949. Keep us informed here bud.

canon, so sorry to hear about your dad, i hope the rest of the family is dealing with it ok.

keep in touch when you can, and know that we all have to step away from the keyboard from time to time, but no one here is forgotten about.

dxmodulator,
its the best mod you can do IMO!
it will increase the signal to noise ratio considerably, meaning that you get less static, and more signals.
your receive will sound quieter, but this is good, as you will notice that an S9 signal is still an S9 signal.
replace Q17 with the 2SC2999.
peak the coils on either side of the transistor, (L5 and L6) for max S meter reading, using a plastic tool that you can get at radio shack. they sell them for TV alignment. dont use jewelers screwdrivers as they will throw off the adjustment.
good luck,
matt

Well Here it is. Yesterday I had the Galaxy 949 hooked up all day in the mobile. It performed just as ******** instructions said. The alternator noise was cut down alot. And yes the radio sounded a little quieter but the recive was picking up faint siginals from all over town and out of town. I can here truckes talking to each other in the distance which will be covred up by static. After the day went by I headed home to my base station which is 45 miles away from my mobile test area. I made contact with the other base stations back in town and got good reports on my siginal making the trip. I also heard their the stations good as well. I have not tried SSB though that will come later. As far as the AF transistir I get good reports both local and DX with solid audio with no distortion. I only dead key 2 watts and swing 7 on low power. The power tranistor provides plenty of power. The lamp on the meter does not dim as I talk on the radio. So it is like Firebreather said. Keep in mind I used NTE equivalent components to do this modification. I used a solarcon open coil mobile antenna for the mobile test and an antron 99 for the base antenna. With a little help behind the radio the reports were all good. The preamp on both mobile (Palomar Deluxe Modulator) and base (Pal 321) pulled in the siginals with less static. All in All a good mix of audio and radio frequintcies on the air with out clipping any modulation diodes or tranistors.

Matt what will improve on the radio if I do the 2SC2999 Mod with the coils. Better recive, better transmit?

first off, dont worry about using the NTE components.
i have always used them on the radios ive done these mods to and they work just fine.

the 2SC2999 mod is an upgrade to your 1st RF amplifier. so it will help with receive in a dramatic manner. you see, the 2SC1674 that is in the radio now creates some noise internally, which is then amplified further and comes out of the speaker like static.
some people mistakenly think they have a very sensitive receiver because they are always receiving between S1 and S2 of noise when all the other stations they talk to say its dead quiet.

if someone did not know better, and you did this mod to their radio, they might think you had made it worse beacuse now it sounds very quiet when no one is talking. but when a signal comes in and they notice that it is still the same strength that it always was, then they realize the benefit of the mod.
now all the people that were underneath the S1 to S2 of noise can be heard.

even if your needle sits at zero when no one is transmitting, this mod will still benefit you.

this mod increases the signal to noise ratio by about 6db, which is roughly equal to a 1 S unit increase.
the NTE107 will work nicely if you cant get the 2SC2999.
good luck,
matt

capt. radio,

only if the 1st RF amp transistor is a 2SC1674. if you can find a schematic of the radio, look in the upper left hand corner. (most schems. are laid out this way)
if you find a transistor there, usually between two tuning coil cans, and it is a 2SC1674, usually labeled "RF AMP" on the schematic, then you can do the 2SC2999 mod to it.

capt. radio, GOOD NEWS!!!

i found a schem. of your radio TRC451, and you can do the mod to it.
you want to replace TR12 with the 2SC2999 or NTE107, and tune L3 and L4 for max. S unit reading.
i sort of tune for max. sound from the speaker along with the max. S-unit on the meter.
these adjustments will vary widely with just a small turn of the coil's ferrite core, so move very slowly and controlled, and always use the right plasitc tool. if you break the core, you have to unsolder the whole can, unscrew it from the bottom, and put it back in upside down, and then for sure you will tune it with the right tool!LOL
i will look for a schem. of the TRC 453.
later,
matt
