if that's one of the mosfet boards, heat is not much of an issue....neither is 200 watts. . if it's the single rm3 transistor, heat buildup was not much of an issue there, either. again, 200 watts....

If those little stinger boards turn out to be really reliable and have no rf issues then I might just have to snag a few of them.

They will also come in very handy indeed for truck drivers if that FCC/DOT crapola thingy ever takes hold. Talk about the perfect sleeper radio...a Uniden Grant with a 200 watt stinger board that actually doesn't blow stray RF all over inside of the radio AND doesn't get hot. That 200 watter will certainly have to come with an optional heat sink and mount to the cover. Time to break out the ol' Dremmel. As long as the placard on the back of the radio says it's type-certified, that's what matters, lol.

I've been doing all the research I could find on these and so far nothing to the bad I have found yet, and reports of people whom have or are using them like them real well and no problems.
Also some of them have them likes them well and good reports.

THE NUMBER OF RM ITALY STINGER BOARD IS AD-203. THIS IS THE NEW AND IMPROVED MODEL. THEY WILL RUN AM/FM/SSB AND ARE RATED FOR 200 WATTS. THEY ALSO DO NOT REQUIRE A HEATSINK. THEY SAY NOT TO PUT IN RADIO THAT KEYS OVER 4 WATTS, BUT I WOULD NOT GO WITH OVER A 2 WATT DEAD-KEY.

THEY ARE REAL SIMPLE TO INSTALL AND THEY WOULD BE OUT OF SITE INSIDE THE RADIO. JUST THE TICKET IF YOU DO NOT WANT ANYONE TO KNOW YOU HAVE HELP.

rm3's are relabled-for-rmitaly. can't remember what they actually are...can't find a thing in the shack right now....but the originals are rated at 30 watts.....on a good day, down hill, with the wind to its back

in the rm3's defense, the output does SEEM to be higher in the kl amps then in the stinger boards.

RM ITALY

AD-203 Stinger Board

Connection Point's LEFT to RIGHT.

ANT ~ Power Supply ~ Power Switch ~ RTX

RM ITALY

AD-203 Stinger Board

Installation Instructions.

#1 ~ Remove speaker-side case of radio and remove speaker from the case.
(save the 4 screws and nuts).

#2 ~ The Radio will need to be Modified so it will only key 2-1/2 to 3 watts.
Super mod down or down tune for best results.

#3 ~ Locate the Antenna Jack (Ant) on back of radio and remove Antenna wire from the SO-239 jack. Locate the "RTX" Coax and "ANT" Coax on the AD-203 Amplifier.

The "ANT" coax will go to the jack and the "RTX" coax will be soldered to the wire which was removed from the SO-239 jack.

NOTE!

BOTH of the Shields on the RTX Coax & ANT Coax from the AD-203 board MUST be GROUNDED!

The hardest part of the Installation is separating the center strand from ther Shield on the RTX & ANT COax from the AD-203'

HELPFUL TIP!

I very carefully cut the OUTER Clear Plastic on the RTX and ANT Coax from the AD-203 and used a fine dental Pick to pull the Center (also plastic coated) of the Coax OUT of the surounding Coax Shield.

The RED and BLACK power lead from the AD-203 Amplifier will be soldered to the radio power jack.

#4 ~ The RED and Black power lead from the AD-203 Amplifier will be soldered to the radio Power Jack. REPLACE the 3-amp fuse from radio with a 10amp fuse in the Power Cord.

#5 ~ The ON/OFF Switch can be mounted on the side or Top of Radio.

#6 ~ Mount the AD-203 Amplifier where the speaker was Removed.

#7 ~ On some radios ike the Cobra Sound Tracker radios a SHIELD will be needed on TOP of the MAIN Printed Circuit Board. This will keep RF out of the Audio Circuit.

NOTE!

A (RF SHIELD) Copper Board (2-1/2" x 3" is also furnished. Solder in on Top of the IF/RF Transformar.

#8 ~ Replace top case on the radio and replace the screws.

PLEASE NOTE!

The AD-203 Stinger Board will work on most SSB Radios but in some cases it may be neccessary to change the eletrolitic capacitor to allow for SSB delay.

DO NOT INSTALL IN ANY RADIO THAT WILL KEY MORE THAN (4) WATTS. per RM ITALY Installation Instruction's.

Hope this help's,

Lon

Probably going to order a Stinger board from Copper when I get paid Friday. Just curious though, I plan to test it out in a 148 SoundTracker. I read in the subscriber preview area about needing extra shielding with the SoundTracker radios. Why is this? Is there something in those radios besides the ST circuit that is the problem? What if you just disable the ST?

I went ahead and ordered mine yesterday, I figured for the price, it's worth it to experiment.. If it's using 4 RM3's like the KL40 uses 1 of , I am figuring 100 to 125 watts AM - still not bad at all for the price!

My concern would be heat, but I guess we'll see!

I'll be driving it with a Virage VX-129CN...

Copper was backordered on them, said they should be in and possibly ship today - guess I will check in over at the customer service section!

Here is my test results on the AD-203

Radio = Virage VX-129CN

It has Super modulation and with a dead key of 2 watts - Swings to 18 watt PEP

AMP ON = keys 4 - Swings to 60 watts PEP

MY Dosy Meter switched to RMS Keys 4 Swings to 25 watts.

I have a 1.1:1 SWR into a 1000 watt oil filed dummy load and operating with a 50 amp pyrimid power supply.

Tech808, is this all I'm going to get?

Tech808,

This is a far cry from the 160-170 watts you were getting in your review.... Any suggestions? Too much swing?? I've heard of some amps that actually "resist" when you push them too hard on the swing side - maybe this is one of them? Sounds like either A) the amp is starving for power , B) it's being driven too hard, or C) maybe some of the RM-3 transistors are bad? Any suggestions would be appreciated ( from Tech808 or anyone else!! )

Copper Forum Member's,

It is the same board as in the KL-203 Mobile with Qty #4~RM-3 Mosfet finals.

For the Review I used a 2 & 3 watt dead key swinging 8 & 10 watts.

Radio's, Antenna's, Main Coax & Jumper's to Radio's, Power Supply and SWR/Watt Meter's were all grounded to a Single Point station ground for the Review.

I Replaced the radio's factory 3 & 4 amp power cord fuse from radio's with the 10 amp fuse (Supplied) in the Radio's Power Cord's.

Both Shields from RTX1 and ANT1 were soldered to the Chassis frame per instruction's.

Hope this help's,

Copper Forum Member's,

This has had me puzzled so today I re-did the installs and testing on both radios again.

My mistake was in my typing of the AM Output power in the Review.

I have Corrected & Updated the REVIEW to read:

The Uniden PC78 had an output on AM of 65 ~ 70 watts.
NOTE! Corrected from: 165 ~ 170

The Cobra 148 GTL-DX had an AM output of 70-80 Watts
NOTE! Corrected from 170~180
Watts on AM
and a SSB output of 175 ~ 180 watts.

I apologize to everyone for my mistake of typing too fast and in proof reading it to get the Review ready.

Don't see why not!

Honestly though, it makes for one heck of an internal modulator, 4 watts swinging 60 should make for a nice loud radio!

Ok this is probably a stupid question, but I'm going to ask anyhow... If the fuse goes out on the stinger board, other than the obvious, will there be any other effects?

My radio was fine on the way to work today, but when I came out and started driving home, I turned it on, and it receives great, it sounds perfectly fine into the talkback, but the amp doesn't click. So, I turned off the power switch to the amp and now I notice that with it on or off , my meter shows NOTHING... FLAT... NADA.... and of course, nobody can hear squat...

If you've seen my most recent photos, you've seen that my radio is installed into a console... I really don't want to pull it out at the moment since it's during the work week unless it's something as simple as just the fuse..

I'll be putting one in a friends 148GTL soundtracker this week. If all goes well I may want one in my Cobra 2000

So far not to satisfied with the 60w (and I use that term loosely) stinger. If I see the results Lon and Kenny are getting out of their soundtrackers I'd be REALLY curious how it sounds in an old 2000.
I'll get back with my results. Only wish for you guys I had another radio to try it in. This would be the THIRD SoundTracker 148GTL in this forum!
Stay tuned~:-)
