I have a question. I did a search but didn't find a suitable answer. I am trying to fine tune my KLV 1000. Also to get this off, my President Washington is running 2.25 watts. It was running 2 watts, but everyone comments on how good it sounds at 2.25. I have not tried running lower than 2 or higher than 2.50.

I'm trying to peak out the amp. If I turn the Drive to about 5, and turn the Load and Tune to where the watt swing maxes out, the "On Air" light is barely on. I get decent reports, but everyone in the area around me with heat is blowing my away in reports, and there's even barefoot people in town blowing me away.

Last night I didn some experimenting, and turned the "Drive" to 10, and turned the "Tune" and "load" to where it was getting decent swing on the watt meter, and it looked like the "On Air" light was on fire it was so bright. I was happy as could be that it was so bright, and got good reports on the dead key. However, when I try to talk into the mike, the watt meter on the amp goes all the way down to nothing. If I re-key again the "On Air" light is blazing.

Do I have something tuned wrong? Am I not putting enough wattage INTO the amp? I want to get the same report I get on that dead key with the drive at 10 and be able to talk into it. I know it's not doing the deal no matter what the watt meter says b/c the on air light is so dim I have to make the room dark to even begin to see it.

Well, it won't trasmit with all three turned to max. Sorry...it apparently doesn't work that way. NO, I don't want to burn her up, but I think I've taken enough precautions not to with running a low DK and letting it warm up.

So is the meter more important or the ON AIR light? It seems I have one or the other, but can't trasmit with the ON AIR on full lighted.

Turn the Load 1st till you see on the KLV Watt meter the max it will go.
Next do the same for the Tune to see max on watt meter and then do the same for the drive and you should be all set, just remember to let the KLV 1000 warm up for at least 5 minutes before doing all this.

ok, first thing is to make sure the radio has forward swing.
key the radio into an external wattmeter, say "ahhh" into the mic, and make sure the needle moves forward, and not backward.
even if it barely moves forward, just make sure it does.
now hook the external wattmeter up after the amp.
turn amp on to standby, and let it warm for at least five minutes.
best to tune the amp in SSB so that it is tuned for max talk power and not max deadkey. i believe this is whats happening to you.

ok, radio is in LSB or USB, amp is in SSB mode, and radio is on the channel you want to use.
each key up during tuning should only be 2-3 seconds long, with 10 second breaks in between key ups.
amp is still in standby, set power level to low.
turn load, plate, and drive knobs to their mid point.
switch amp to ON.
key radio, and while watching EXTERNAL wattmeter, say "ahhh" into the mic while adjusting LOAD control for max wattage.
un key and take a break.
key radio, say "ahhh", adjust PLATE control for max wattage.
repeat for DRIVE control.
repeat this process two or three times until its all maxed out.
now if you want to talk AM, switch radio and amp to AM, key up, and talk into the mic. you should see a decent forward movement of the wattmeter when talking.
you can do this tune up procedure in AM, just make sure you are saying "ahhh" into the mic while tuning.
otherwise you are tuning the amp for max deadkey and it has nowhere to go when you talk.

Awsome Matt. I usually let the amp warm up for 15 minutes (just to be safe). I'll try that this afternoon! Unfortunatly don't have time this morning but did want to get on here and say thanks for the reply! I can't wait to get home and try her out.
