do you mean SWEEP tubes ? MOST are not made anymore.
Right now the BEST buy in tubes is the 811/572 tubes used in HAM amps like the al-811. OTHERWISE go with SOLIDSTATE . |

i'm looking for a clean linear that wont splater
on tv's and the like
they tell me to look for a linear with real autio tubs like 500z's
I JUST WANT TO KEEP PEACE AND GET OUT SOME TO
if i can do 150 rms watts thats all I need |

grumpy, other then the amature tube amps, and sweep tubes are getting rare?? some of the russian tube amps are ok, then agin you have the steel ceramic, but they tend to cost alittle?? lol
as your saying about 150 watts, mite look into a pride?? trying to give ya options!!

grumpy, your profile says you use an rci 2990....if so, 150 watts with, say a 4 element beam will get you 20-25 times the power, or the equivalent of 3000 watts. if the radio is clean to start with, everything well grounded, you'll PROBABLY have less tvi issues then with ANY amp.... |

Get a Heathkit SB200. Runs good off 110. Run mine with a DK of 125 and swing to about 700. RMS in the 250 to 300 watt range. You can get more watts by driving it hard but tube wont last long. I love mine. 0 TVI problems. |

I would go solid state. If your radio is properly tuned and your not trying to over modulate your audio then 150 watts will not cause tvi. Research and take all the steps to do your install correctly. Good low pass filters are a must with base setups.

I agree with the above statements.
Good grounding is a must.
Use of a good quality low pass filter is a must.
Having a good radio, without over modulation is a must.
Having a good antenna, nice and high, with good SWR is a must.
Using good quality coax is a must. I'd go with Copper "newly carried" Altelicon CA-400. Can't beat it for the price.
Tube or Transistor amps haven't really been a problem for me when setup correctly. Had a problem once about 13 years ago and my mom put a stop to it REAL quick...She cut my coax!
As a side note, I'm gunna have to holler at the Indiana boys when I can get my mobile up and going again. |

If you are having problems with front end overload in consumer devices NO AMP will keep the peace, power is simply power in that aspect.
If you are tearing up someone's TV and they are using poorly installed cable TV or an antenna then the type of amp MAY make a difference.
Proper setup is key. But swamping the front end of cheap consumer devices is going to happen and the only way to rid yourself of that is height, height, height and an antenna that's throwing verry little signal down to the ground (lower angle of radiation)

Well said Chad. My rig is 70 feet from the house and 50 feet in the air and I still get a little herringbone in my TV (looking at off-air reception) if I push too much. We have to remember that this service (CB) causes harmonics right in the broadcast band...so we have an uphill battle if we want to run more than FCC allowed output. But start at the radio Grumpy...if it's splattering you'll have nothing but issues strapping on an amp. |
