Below is a Question I received in an e-mail from a Copper Forum Member that I figured may be of help to other Copper Forum Member's as well so I am posting it below. Question: Lon, I've got that old Tug8, grey base, chrome neck and head D-104, 4 wire mic. What would the wiring be for a 5 pin Washington ? Thanks, Jim Answer: PIN #1 ~ WHITE / AUDIO PIN #2 ~ N/C / Not Connected PIN #3 ~ BLACK / RECEIVE PIN #4 ~ SHIELD PIN #5 ~ RED / TRANSMIT

Lon, this mic only has sheild, white, black and red. I looked inside the base and that is all that runs through the mic cord. I just got this mic with no plug on it. There is also a switch on the base, for what I am not sure. Would I leave pin 4 with no connection then ? Moderator Note NOTED and CORRECTED IN ABOVE POST. Lon Tech808 |

Lon, Couldn't get the above to work without a squeal. My echomax and regular D-104 show a blue/brown switching wire on pin 4 and shield on pin 2. I only have the 4 wires with the mic I have. Any other ideas ? Thanks, Jim |

Biskybabyusa, Try cleaning the contacts in the base of the mic with a very fine emery board (finger nail file) as the constant arcing between the contacts builds up and prevent's good metal to metal contact over time. Also check all wiring from the base to the head and the wiring from the base thru the stem to the Mic element (head). Has the mic worked on other radio's with no problem's? Since you stated you just got it you could also have a bad mic element. Lon ~ Tech808 ~ N9CEF CEF#808 ~ CEF HAM#33 ~ CVC#002 10-10 #61493 ~ 10-10 VP#2688 Tech808@copperelectronics.com

Lon, It works fine with my 2527 and 2990 when wired with 4 wires. Didn't see any contacts to clean. There looks like 2 boards in this mic. Not much mechanical. I got this on an internet auction site. There is a switch on the base that turned on the amplification, but when off didn't seem to do much (very little audio if any), so I bypassed the switch so it is always on and left the switch there so there wouldn't be a big hole showing. Seems good and loud though.Don't think I need a "switching wire" huh ? Thanks for all your thoughts on this. Jim |
