I hope you can steer me somewhere or shed some light on my older RCI-2970. Everything was fine till about 2 months ago and wham, my noise level went from 1 to 3-4 on Sideband and on AM went from zero to 1-2. I have this "white noise" present at a slight level even when the coax is unplugged. Any ideas on what it might be or how to diagnose it?? Changed antennas and coax and made no difference. I did find a bad ground solder joing going from the chassis to the board and thought that might be it. Soldered it and still have this noise.

Have you considered that it may not be the radio at all, but rather a new source of RFI introduced in your vehicle? I'm assuming that you are using it as a mobile based on where you started this thread.

Have you recently changed vehicles? Are you a truck driver?

If you are a truck driver, then it could be alot of things.

First narrow it down.

1) Does is happen when your engine is off?

a) Most likely NOT the vehicle causing it...time to look at the radio.

2) Does it happen with the key in the ON position but the engine off?

a) Could be as accessory that is powered only when the key is ON

b) Turn off your heater motor...does the problem go away?

c) Does it happen only when you are charging your cell phone?

3) Does it happen as soon as you turn the engine on?

a) Could be coming from your ECM, your tachometer (this happens to be my case!), your fuel injectors, or many other different sources of RFI. I just figured out a problem that has been plaguing me for 3 years. I finally narrowed it down to my tach...unplugged it and my problem is gone.

4) Does it only happen when you build up speed and begin rolling down the road?

a) Most likely coming from the static buildup from your steer tires. Newer trucks use synthetic oil in their steer hubs. Synthetic oil does not conduct electricity as well as standard oil. The static buildup from the tires transfers through your wheels into your hub, then into your hub oil. The oil creates a barrier between your bearings and your spindle. If the static cannot be transferred to your spindle and thereby to ground, it generates a TON of static in your radio. The cure: make your oil conductive by adding graphite powder to it. Do a search on the forum here and you'll see the instructions. Trust me, it works!

5) Also, alot of drivers wonder why they have a ton of noise in their receiver only to find out (usually from me, lol) that power inverters and cb radios are not compatible. Almost every time I pass a driver and see MY noise level go way up in my receiver, it's almost always a power inverter that is the culprit. Many drivers are flabbergasted that I just cured their receive problem just by driving by and saying something. They turn off their power inverter and BAM! They can hear again.

Anyhow, if your not a truck driver, I just did a whole lot of typing for nothing, lol. Well, maybe someone else can benefit from it.

The vehicle is a 2000 Powerstroke Ford. It makes no difference if the key is in or out or if the vehicle is running or not. This noise is constant. The radio is wired directly to one of the batteries. I installed it about a little over a year ago and had no noise problems. I too suspected my wiring for the injectors, but since I have this noise without the key in it, I ruled that out.

Double check your ground...then check it again. :-)
Keep it as short as possible and go RIGHT to chassis with it...seat bolt or nearest metal you can clean and screw to.
Have you plugged in another radio to see if it is in fact the radio itself?

I ran a wire from one of the rear panel screws to the metal frame of my dash board and it made no difference. It was maybe 6 inches long. I checked my coax and just for the heck of it I ran a different coax and it also made no difference. I have since had it shipped to a shop and hopefully they can tell me something and not burn me at the same time. We will keep you posted!!

Like I said earlier, it doesn't make a difference if its running or not or if the key is still in the house. The noise it still there. Looking for another 2970/50 to check against right now.

I had that happen to my 2950DX, It was caused by a person keying up his radio with a 500 watt amplifier in the car next to me at the local CB shop parking lot. I had just pulled into a parking spot and did not notice what this guy was doing before it was to late. I forget exactly what components in the radio were failed from that but the tech said somebody front-ended my receiver really bad. Luckily he fixed my 2950DX under warranty at the time.

Darn, I didn't think about that but that may be what happened. I had a friend over and we were meeting somewhere and we were real close. He sometimes has his Texas Star 500 on so maybe thats what happened!! Thanks a bunch as this may be what happened.
