OK, I want to make my radio dead key 1.5 and swing to 4. I am doing this so I don't overdrive my amp. However, what meter setting do I use, peak or AVG? Right now, in AVG mode it swings up to about 4 watts on AM. However, in peak mode, it swings to about 14 watts AM. Let me know. Thanks.

you're really going about it backwards, james.

assuming your 148 & 667v....amp variable all the way 'up', & switches set for HIGH POWER. turn radio's mic gain to ZERO, then, key up & adjust radio til AMP shows 125-150 watts dead key. (after you get things set, you MAY want to 'up' the dead key nearer 200, based on 'heat'. BUT you'll have to stop if swing decreases or even goes backwards). then with meter in avg or rms setting, turn mic gain 'UP' til it shows NO further increase in swing. if you do it in PEP setting, it is POSSIBLE for PEP to go even higher, yet, but, anything past the max in rms is usually garbage, bleedover & other trash-no added effective increase.

sounds like radio is stock, if things are working good, leave 'em. a mildly modded 148 will do 9+ rms swing & 15-20 PEP swing.....also with the possibility of introducing 'garbage' the higher you go.

that amp can take up to about 20 watts peak.
maybe 25 watts, but thats pushing it.

if your radio is keying 1.5 watts, and swinging to 14 peak watts. it is perfect and will drive that amp great.

personally, i would turn the dead key up to 3 watts but thats just me.

set the SSB power (VR11) to about 16-20 watts.
you'll be all set.
matt
anyone wanting a "clean signal", just look to the left and build one of these!!!
