Can the mike gain or audio be turned up in a 2970dx? Dont want to remove the limiter and want to make sure that it wont need a alignment if done. I'm thinking of turning VR17 all the way or until it starts clipping?
Anyone have some input? |

Well not to clipping but all the way on the adjustment and use the mike gain to turn it down.
Any other tips or tricks for this so far outstanding radio? |

I think that adjusting the modulation trimmer to maxium modulation right before clipping would be your easiest bet. I assume you'll be using a scope to see this? It's the only true way to see what you're doing, in my opinion.
There are a few guys that are changing some of the resistors in the audio/mic input area to match those of the RF Limited S9 radio and they are getting fairly good results. You can look around on the net for the locations and they are being done mostly on Galaxy radios. This might be an option for you and it might not be.
The only other thing that comes to mind would be to install one of the Top Gun modulators and compressors in your radio. They can be found on the net as well and are exactly what's in the RF radios to my knowledge. I don't think I've heard another radio as loud as the S series radios, so this might be a very good option for you. You can probably make them switchable too so you can turn them on and off.

Well, I have a ociliscope however no signal gen to produce a good tone.
Radio was said to be peaked and tunned however sadly not from copper but gi so not sure about job. Seems good so far but then again coming from a Galaxy DX959 this is my first "real" radio. |

Well you can do the whistle thing and achieve the same result. Once you use a signal generator that produces the correct tone, you'll see you can also achieve that tone by using a whistle. You can also do this to get the two-tone needed for SSB. GI has probably done a good job and you might not need to do anything else to the radio.
You won't need to adjust modulation by the mic gain if you adjust the trimmer correctly. That and if you don't mess up and start clipping parts and doing that dreaded diode mod. Now if you want to key low and swing high then the diode thing is what you are looking for. But I don't have that information though I'm sure it's located easily here.
Your quest for louder audio is understandable and I think the methods I listed will get you there.

Well after a few days of use I think I may just leave it alone. It can dk30 and swing/pep to 150+.
Some say I sound a little softer than my Galaxy DX959.
I can hear more things than ever. These ears are nice. I think a nice ext speaker and im all set.
Any recommendations? |

I believe Ranger makes a metal case speaker that I've been told sounded really good. I don't know man I guess it is up to you about a external. A 2970dx is a really good radio. If it's been aligned by someone who knows what they are doing then you have one of the best radios on the market. |

yes do not clip anything.turn up the vr as already posted.carefull though if ya go all
the way up with a power mic ya may over modualte ssb.but before ya do anythibng check mic gain
run this wide open then if audio is still unsuffience adjust your power mic.if ya happen to get that maxed out as well as the mic gain then slowly adjust the vr.this is how i do mine
