Hey guys, I need to lower the dead key on a 1992 Philly Cobra 142 GTL. Any Ideas?

This one is totally stock. A guy at work gave it to me - said it was his dads. Told me I probably wouldn't want "an old CB". I said "I guess I'll take it off your hands".

It's like BRAND NEW!

Gotta get the the dead key down from 4 watts though and need some help.

Thanks,
Steelworker

Let us say no matter how old, if it's an original 148-GTL and not a sound tracker or one of the new China made. It's one the best sideband rigs that ever was sold.
Myself I've owned several of the original 148-GTLs. VR-10 is the AM dead key adjustment. If you want to turn it down to run an amp. 2-2 and a half watts is what most owners set the dead key at. Although many leave the radio at four watts dead key without any problems.
When adjusting VR-10, one needs to turn the Dynamike/microphone gain control all the way to the left-the off position.

Thanks to both of you - thats the information I was looking for.

Alright, I'm not gonna beat a dead horse on this post but I gotta speak my peace about this.

I live in an area that is very big into CB and export radios. Yes, I've used nearly all of them on the market. RCI, Galaxy, Connex, Magnum, etc. etc. The many people that frequent the airwaves in my area know a good signal when they hear one (some are your run of the mill CB drones - but for the most part they know a good sounding radio when they hear one).

But I took this old 148 GTL out today and hooked it up in the Dodge diesel. All I did was lower the DK to 2 watts (everything else is as new because the radio is basically still new). I hooked up the Wilson 1000 magnet mount and the KL 203 and decided to try the old girl out.

I'm heading up town to Autozone to pickup a few things and I key it up and MAN!! the people went CRAZY!! "What are you talking on?" was the main question I got. Everyone thought it was some kind of pumped up Galaxy or something. I simply told them it was an old Cobra 19.

Needless to say, I am NOW and forever more a true believer in the AUDIO POWER of the old school Cobra 148 GTL.

PS - I just ordered a Texas Star 500 from Copper so I can get out and make contacts on the CEF's with the 148.

Peace,

Ken (Steelworker), I think you might find that your 1992 148-GTL is a true Uniden made. 1992 was around the time Uniden broke away from being the major builder for Cobra, if you take the top cover off and if it is a Uniden, the name Uniden is within the soldier side of the board.
After about 1992-93 The 148-GTL was made by several companies, and none were Uniden. My 1994 148-GTL was built by RCI (Ranger). The 1994 RCI model is much the same as those by Uniden.
I see you found out, the original 148-GTL is an audio screamer on transmit, without messing with the other adjustments, other than using a good grade power microphone.

Steelworker, Ahhh MAN! If you put a DX 500 with that bad boy your gonna be locking down the town for sure. Thats what I did with my 148 and DX500 with a Predator 10K! 2 watt deadkey was PERFECT and the amp did 500+ watts pep on the Astatic 600 meter!!!!
This was with my China 148! Your Philly 148 is gonna rock! Later on I replaced the 148 with my Conny 4800! It's been a love story ever since.
KEEP IT REAL!
