Hello, this is my first post here. I need some directions on how to install a switch to cutoff the amp on the RCI-2990. It has the orange display. I have removed the top cover and looked inside around the left side toward the back for the 2 wires that control the amp. I see 2 or 3 black wires. Which wires are supposed to be cut to add the toggle switch? |

personally id never do that to that radio.
there are vr pots to turn down the output on all
modes.you want am or ssb turned down?or both?
vr12-ssb high power
vr13=am high power
vr14=modulation
vr15=am low power
vr16=ssb low power
this will also work on 2970,2950 orange display

There should be a red wire also. If so, cut it and if not it may be orange. Install a switch at that point. Use good wire, no cheap stuf and a good 250 volt switch!!! It will cut the power to the amp. You need to put in an accessable point though. Gets to be a pain reaching behind radio to turn it off and on when in a cabnet or tight spot. Keep in mind, you will have to always turn the amp on to adjust modulation, swr, and power meters. If off, all will be too low to properly adjust them. Also, NEVER run an amp inline on the radio. You may forget about it being on 1 time and dead key to much in to the amp and fry it!!! it may not with high drive but im not sure. I have done this on the 2990 and 2995 with no problem, keep this in mind also, do not readjust as above when you do this, it will all be off when you use the amp, leaving all vr settings as they are will allow local talking without to much power or over modulation to the neigbor 2 blocks away with a base radio also. You will achieve low dead key, 1-2 watts I believe, and you will only swing 10-15 watts max which is fine for a base radio.The modulation and audio will be great sounding and you can trully tell folks you are barefoot on a 2990 radio.

I just turn my Rf power back to the low side and mike gain back so it does not over mod.and leave it along.I do this with my 2970 as well.On my 2970 on low power I have the mike gain set at a 1/4 turn and sounds great.2990 dx at 1/2 on the mike gain on low.I did go in side a adjust both radios two do 4 watts on low in side then just learned how to adjust the radios.Mine I can turn the mike gain on full on hi power.I have had both these radioes since 2001 and they sound great on the air,just have to know were to set the mike gain.I let both radios only swing to 20 watts on low and use stock mikes .Thakes care of back gound and still load and proud.
PS before you adjust AM low power on this radio cheek out both hi and low power.On mine when I adjusted one it efected the other so I adjusted both togather untell I got what I wanted.I actualy droped my hight power for 50 dead key to 45 and radio sounds better.Every radio is different.Hope I could help.Ps I can have a car under my antenna and still not be over destorted on high or low.just had to learn how to run the radio.lol. |

agree i did exact same thing.reason ya seen 1 affect is other probaly is cause the high power
adjustment affects the low.so for that reason always adjust the high first to what ya want.then adjust the low.my 2970,2990 did 2watts
on low and 30 or 40 on high
