well the difference in output meters could
be 1 of 2 things or both.meters most likely
should use a dummyload and not the external
antenna.another thing is even with a bird meter
you still may see a 1 watt difference,on different bands.the backwards swing is from mistuning.sounds like the tx tuning cans/slugs
are set way too high.if your unfamiliar with
how 2 peak the radio id find a good shop somewere
cause it needs a good tuning.could even send it back to ranger?
1]did ya get it thru coppers?
2]is it still under warrantry thru ranger?

I have been useing my 158 for a while now and haven't experienced that problem. On 11 meters My 158 puts out on a Dosy Libra 631 AM DK/12 swing to 19/20 SSB will swing up to 52 watts with normal speech and will go higher if really driven with a loud voice. a friend here has a 158 also and his outputs are similiar to mine. I run my modulation at 110% peak and still doesn't swing backwards or overmodulate. If those are accurate readings you are getting, I would send it back to Ranger and let them fix that problem as that is not normal behaviour for an 158 EDX.

Are you using Peak reading meters? Could it be your seeing RMS watts? (Which is WAY too low anyway)
If you DKing 4w you should still see at least 6 to 10w RMS set up properly on AM.
Neg swing? I hate to think you've got one blown final and one very weak one about to go.
With the reviews I'm hearing on this radio it seems it's peaked as is and turning it up more could only make it worse.
As for the variance in wattage I'd bet if you went even lower in freq they would get higher yet and going higher in freq would show even lower wattage. That radio probably had somebody trying to broaden the bandwidth and got lost or gave up.
Sounds to me like a Butterknife tech has been in there doing some "tuning".
What are YOU seeing in SSB watts?
What are your "on air" reports from friends?
Best of luck with an otherwise great radio!
