I found 2 versions of the mod.maybe someone can verify which is correct.
SS-158EDX

Frequency Expansion

1. Find J30. (forward edge, center of main PCB).
2. Move jumper from pins 1-2 to pins 2-3.
3. Find J5 (about 2 inches behind mike jack, 2 inches back from fws edge of main pcb ).
4. Unplug blue-black-white plug, and plug into J29.
NOTE: This should only plug in one way: ( blue wire to left )
5. On the solder side of the main PCB, remove the 100 ohm resistor.
6. The Hi-Low tone switch on front panel now becomes the Hi-Low band switch to give 12 bands of 40 channels, totaling 480 channels available.

the foil side there is a 100ohm resistor located on one of the adder IC's for the PLL. If the radio faceplate is facing you, it will be in the bottom right hand corner. Remove this resistor. Flip the radio over to the component side and there is a wiring harness plugged into J4 located towards the front middle of the radio, just to the right of the carrier oscillator (X4). Remove this harness and place into J2 which is right below the echo control on the main PCB. Just below J2 is JP275, move the black jumper over one spot

The Channel Conversion I have posted above is the one that I have personally used on roughly 20 ~ 158EDX's including our own for the REVIEW and also Recommended to several other Copper Forum Member's who have used it with no problem's.

Here is a question I asked in subscriber reviews and it went unanswered so I will attempt it again here,
I am still wanting this radio and im still going to get it. Here is something I found out on it and want to see if anyone can add to this question and elaburate on it. I have heard that you can replace the factory installed resistor across the LOW Power VR and lower the dead key on these radios lower than 4 watts. This is tampering with the main board and surly voiding the warrantee if it is possible to do. What can anyone say about it and any thoughts. I have heard that doing this can get the dead key as low as 1 watt and swing the rest as high as 40 watts. Have I been lied too? I have heard this and from several people and they "say" it works well. I have a TS modulator and with the radio at 4 watts, I can bring the DK down with the variable on my star so it really doesnt matter, Puzzled minds want too know though. Thanks for any info. DX

Richey,
I am no tech by any means but if it was me buying one brand spanking new i wouldn't do a thing to it until warranty expired. If you mod it and blow it sky high you've basically sprayed X amount of dollars up the wall. Just be patient and get it percolating nicely for the time it is under warranty, then once it has expired it's all yours to do whatever with. I have spoken to people that own them and all of them are more than happy with the performance of the radio bog stock out of the box.

well im no tech either but i wouldnt try it.
heres what id try may work/may not.
instead of having your high dk vr set at 10 watts try lowering it to 5-8 watts it may lower
the low dk.causae when tuning radios it told
to always set the high dk first as it affects
low dk.

Sonoma's version is the one I used to get the full freq conversion. Works well, and there is nothing like having 12 bands to listen to. And I must say, it really is the best radio I have ever owned!

This version worked for me:

Flip the radio over to the component side and there is a wiring harness plugged into J4 located towards the front middle of the radio, just to the right of the carrier oscillator (X4). after conversion what is the frequency coverage? im interested in picking one up for the pickup nd want to retain most of the 10m band. i enjoy 10m fm simplex (29.6000)and want to try am dx once the sunspot cycle hits full bloom (around 29.2000) as well as conventional usb usage. of course i would like to only have 1 radio in the truck for some good old fashioned 11m rag chewing bbut want somthing other than a 2950.

Hi all, getting ready to do an expansion on a very current version and all the info floating around seems contradictory. I'm not sure if the board used has recently changed or if there were ever different versions of the expansion that worked but even here on the forum the post from last year has two completely different expansion mods that people both claim worked!

Tech 808, or some one else who knows please clarify the instructions for the current unit. I'm sure quite a few people are looking for the correct answer to this question.

Thanks for the help.
