How do I convert my Cobra 29GTL into a 11 meter freeband? I bought the radio for $50.00. It works on CB good. I hate truckers. It is an old Uniden board radio.
I opened up the radio and found D-11 cut. On a website I noticed this mod under "modulation". Does this help me in my 11 meter endeavor?
It also said "pulling pin 9 high to give 455KHz below standard 26.510 and above 26.954" . I found the chip (PD2816), it has 22 pins. How do I start numbering them - 1, then across to 2, etc, or 1-11 down 1 side (I found pin 1), and how do I lift it, it seems soldered.

What kind of mobile antennae do I need to use these freqs.

Would I need a power booster above 5 watts, can I mod this radio above 5 Watts? Or can I TX on 11 meter from my car fine without one?

What are cap mods (I know what a capacitor is), but why do I mod it, and what is "cap to parallell C62, parrallel with 68-100pf"?

What are power mods "L14,L13,L12".

Is this a good radio to start with, for 11 meter freeband? I am just looking for advice. (I already know it is not good in 'Sams eyes to be on 11 meter, but there are a bizzilion USA users registered on the 11meter groups, so uncle sammie must not care too much)
Without spending too much $$$.

First of all cb band is 11 meter, the freeband channels you are talking about out channels that are not allocated by the fcc for talking on, but with the right tools, you can tx and rx on these freq's second you don't need more that what the radio putts out but its nice if you want it. third cap mods are ways you can modify your radio for power and modulation by replaceing or crossing capacitors with other capacitors, and fourth the l13 l12 l11 are the lables and location of the tuning coils that need to be tuned to bring up your power, I also suggest that if d11 is cut,,, Replace it, and just turn up vr4 all the way then back it off a hair, Cutting d11 is called cliping the audio limiter and this can cause spuriouse emitions that are not good on your radio or your naihbors electronics and could only cause problems, it can overdrive the audio ic and blow it, turning up vr4 then backing off just a hair, will alow for 100 percent modulation, anything going over 100 percent will cause bleed over and other bad things......hope this helps good luck and 73's
P.s. I am not sure about the pulling pin 9 high, tell me the web sight you got that from and I will check it out and see if it may be legit...
good luck..

Barakuda318,
I found the info at
http://www.superior.net/~haggis/pll3.html where it says "The SSB models can be modified by pulling pin 9 HIGH. This will give 40 channels exactly 455Khz below the standard 'FCC' channels (ie. 26.510 - 26.950). The others can be modified by injecting new mixing frequencies with an external oscillator/crystal switch."
So, I don't know if this is a legit site, and I really dont want to go cutting a pin and pulling it and risk damaging the chip. I could heat it with a solder gun, although I dont know if the heat would damage it also.

Basically, what do I need to do to get freeband out of this radio? Isn't my radio AM only (I don't have a switch for SSB).

right that means that if you have a side band model cobra cb radio that uses the same pll you could do this, but as for your radio just being am trying to use different frequencies would not work because it would requirer further tuning and possibly different mixing crystals to get the radio to cover that band the mixing crystal in the radio at this point is not that broadbanded, so as for moding this radio you would have to use an expo kit, I am not sure were you can get them maybe copper has them but not sure,

I've seen the Expo kit. Does this kit give the whole freeband?

I'm not sure if it will give the entire freeband but I know that is shoud give you 40 up and 40 down, or either 40 up or down there may be different kits to go up or down..... have to check into it.....???

I was thinking the same thing? The post is about taking a cb set and turning it into a DC-DAYLIGHT radio. As for truckers 99% are just hard working guys like the rest of us. From a HAMS view as long as they stay off 10 meters i cant see any reason to have any problems with one ...... much less hate him.
