Okay guys - I understand the old standby conversion radio is the Cobra 148GTL. However, lunatics on e-bay drive this used old radio up close to a SuperStar 3900 - for a used radio w/o mods! (I hate E-bay!). What is a good cheap "garage sale priced" CB/SSB capable of mods for freeband? Does anybody have a decent CB/SSB your willing to part with for "garage sale proces" vs Ebay insanity? I made my first freeband DX's on a friends radio, and I'm hooked. If your willing to sell, I'm at kth30075@hotmail.com . Listen for me as 2 CM 2624, on the calling freq. |

The Uniden PC-122 has SSB and 40 channels. I'm not sure if they make them anymore? I'm pretty sure they do! That's the cheapest sideband rig I've found so far :-) |

The uniden grant is a good idea. Its really modable you can do quite a few things to them. And its not to expensive. |

Thanks for the info. For Rightwing - E-Bay is a good place sometimes, but I watched (again) bid wars for old dinged SSB/CB's sit at $40ish, then bid wars in the last hours run them up to almost $80-90 bucks. I don't know, it must be a pride thing to "win" something so no one else gets it. I will have to hit the garage sales and fairs hard. Does anybody do much on AM anymore? |

KTH- you can find really cheap stuff on Ebay that is suitable for conversion, like: Any older PLL02A Midland SSB mobiles. I've seen these go for $40 practically new looking and unhacked. The mods are easy for 02A, and readily available on the web, in case you want to do experiments with chip programming. These radios (77 or 78-XXX series) are workhorses with pretty tough finals. |

I'd take a 3900 as quick as a grant or 148. 6 bands of 40 channels (most only for listening, of course), fine AND coarse clarifier and a freq counter jack. Also, any of the 485 rigs you can get cheap (i.e. titan road pro, trc 485, magnum 275,etc.) Also, the VR 9000 operates like the 3900 with twice the power and a built in freq counter. Znut |

The Grant XL and the 148GTL are basically the same radio. You can channel, supertune and mod.kit the grant exactly the same way you do a 148gtl(Except for the traces for the 4.7k resistor on the mod.kit) |

If you buy on e-bay, be aware I have have had poor experence. Junk, they may power up and transmit a signal but no more. No returns on e-bay, your stuck and out of luck. Three buys so far, all sellers had very good ratings. I now cruise the garage and swap meets and get the same radio for $5 "vs" the $25 & up e-bay. Everything I bought local has worked, not the same for e-bay. If you want 3 ssb/11 meter Name brand transceivers cheap give me a call, all e-bay steals, not even a mike worked on another radio. For the $120 I spent on product and shipping I could of had a new radio from Copper with a real warrenty that would of worked for a long time, PERIOD! Just my view, others have had good deals on E-bay and you may as well. Climber |

I have to say that 307 is right on! The 3900 may not be a Cadillac but it gets my vote on BANG FOR BUCK. I have 2 Galaxy DX93T's and 1 SS 3900. I will not let my Superstar go. It is nearly 10 years old and talks with the best. Excellent radio for the $$$ !!! I wouldn't sell mine for the price to buy a NEW one. Honestly... 73's - Ron CEF 134 |

you dont want to get the uniden pc-122 or the cobra 146gtl because they are not moddable without an expo kit. anything with the upd858, the 5080, or the PLL02A are moddable. i recommend the 1st 2 since they will cover more and there's less gaps in the freq spacing |

Mine is the Uniden Grant XL, channels easily, 2 channels on the clarifier, takes the Galaxy FC-347 frequency counter nicely, reads dead center on frequency, misses nothing from 26.805.0 - 27.995.0 Mhz., super loud audio, receives like none other, has a 5kc down switch to go in between channels. I run it as a base radio with a Turner Plus 3 desk microphone. The old Cobra 148 GTL is the same radio. After all is said and done. To dress one up the way mine is and in like new condition, your looking at a price tag around $250.00 with the frequency counter. But first you have to find one used in like new condition and not all hacked up and banged up, no the Uniden Grant LT or the new Cobra 148 GTLs are not the same radios, they only look alike and not as stable staying on frequency if you want to use it mobile in a cold winter area. |

Applejack, no one has found a mod for the Cherokee 150 as yet, not the Cherokee 150 at any price. I've had one open and didn't like what I saw and this radio was like new. |

yankee My grant lt was bought for about $100 during copper nets it sits from 11am to 4pm and simply dosnt drift. True in Tampa we dont get all that cold but for what they cost hard to beat.... Now if you realy want a radio get a ft-100d or ic-706...... it will cost a few more bucks ... but it's only money. |

Bruce, As a senior citizen living on a fixed income, money is a problem and my collection sports some 10 radios, at present I have the old goodie the UPD858 President Washington in the hospital, radio works fine just geting it tuned up, broadbanded, 10Kc put in along with all the updates that Copper Forum has been so kind to come up with.I'm the gent that resently E-mailed you about the code/no code problem on QRZ.COM. Yes, I can and have done the work that is being done on my Washington, but my old hands are no longer steady enough to do printed circuit work. 73, Carl |

Applejack, I'm going to try to tell you the reasons you don't want to buy a cheap (garage sale priced SSB radio). First it may be junk and not working. #2 it might be a basket case inside with parts missing (this has happened to a friend of mine on Ebay). #3 don't buy a radio that you haven't heard on receive or talked on and gotten reports with. Unless it's a new in the box radio with a warranty. #4 Know the person your buying from if it's used. #5 in over 40 years on the air I've only gotten one bad used radio and that is a Kenwood ham rig, but the good part is it can be repaired by a Kenwood repair center for about $150.00 plus shipping to and from and then it's worth $600.00 or more, it is one of ten radios I own so I don't worry about it and have it stored away. And lastly you don't buy (good) cheap SSB radios. Although you might want to keep your eye on the pawn shops every now and then you just might get lucky. I've gotten lucky twice but I knew where the radios came from and who owned them before the pawn shop. Radios are kinda like buying a car. 73 And happy hunting, Yankee |

Yankee OK on email send me another one crazy as it sounds i get as many as 700 emails a day. As for cheep radios im very impressed with the GrantLT maby i just got s realy good one but it's very stable clean sounding has lots of audio all stock out of the box. Now other 100-200 priced sets im not impressed with..... as for e-bay i find few bargans ... lots of this radio was owned by my late dad ...... you get it and his late dad used a chain saw on it. |
