I would just like to know what the best way to get good swing out of this radio would be? Alot of people have told me to cut the limiter to get swing, but I don't want to do that cause of spuriouse emitions and all, and I am affraid that I will over modulate, anyhow could I possibly put a resistor inline Were the diode was if I clip it, or would this solve anything, anyway I have limited ability to check my power output as for some reason my meter won't work properly in the base set up but works fine in the moble set up, so an easy way to tune this rig is a plus, any help would be greatly appreciated..thanx

I was just curiouse a friend of mine said that a cb shop tech told him that is what he done, I didn't really think that made much since, but thought I would ask, I already have vr 4 maxed out then backed off just a hair, modulation is great I just need the radio to swing more so it will push my amp better, I have it keying 2 watts, and swinging about 4-5 but I know it is capable of more, I don't even use the sound tracker cause I know what it does, sounds like ••••, but all in all I just need a little more wattage out of this thing, I have a shooting star 225 plus, and all I am getting out of it is about 100 watts, I know it will do more cause I had a 138xlr hooked to it once and it would swing about 140 watts, I would at least like to get 10 watts swing out of the radio so that it will push my amp better, thanx for your time, much help thanx

The way I tune the 29 you keep your limiter intact, the carrier would be 1.5w, and your peak power about 22w.
If you would like yours to do that drop me an email.

get a vr-9000 mine works great and it has plenty of frequencys echo roger beep, duel finals, varible power,10kc switch, the transmit slides, duel clarifier, frequency counter, and it tops out at 45 watts, loud and lear.great radio for the price.i sold my 29 cause they need to much work to keep up with todays advanced radios.

Step 1. Melt the wax or epoxy seal with soldering iron. Also make sure your alignment tool fits well in the slot.
Step 2. VR-4 MODULATION
Step 3. Tune for max L14, L13, and L12 for max swing on channel 20, AM
Step 4. If possible inject 600 hz tone into mic, or say auuuudio, while tuning for max.
Step 5. Gently spread apart L12 coil while monitoring on meter for max swing.

MODULATION

Parts Required:
NOTE:"The radio should be properly peaked before attempting the following instructions."

1- 220uf electrolytic capacitor 10-16 v
1- 100 to 200 ohm resistor 1/4 or 1/2 watt
Step 1. Unsolder jp6 near the final. Step 2. Solder a 220uf capacitor with the negative facing the final where jp6 was removed Step 3. Solder a 100 ohm resistor across the capacitor leads on the solder side of the board.

That little modulation mod is easy,

just solder in 2 parts and thats it.

those parts are avlable at radioshack.

I put the 1969 final in my radio, and changed a few other things, and it was stronger with the stock final. Anyone have a run down of this mod? If not, I'm gonna burn my 29 and just keep using my 44. Atleast it does sound good.

i cant help but wonder if everone says turn it down because its way over modulated.

L12 coil, spreading this causes harmonics to pass through thats fools your meters into showing more wattage when in fact its no stouter than it was before it was spread.

ive got a 29 coming but i dont think ill be spreading any coils in her.

npc-rc/ppe maybe!

Hey Bullet, I didn`t think you could do a npc-rc on a 29? I thought the radios with the transformers like that couldn`t be done? Any techs have any thoughts? If it can be done would love to do it to a buddies 29,I have his dead key 1W, swings 14W`s modulation is loud and clear.all I did was do the swing mod, changed the resistors at the final to open them up more.

HURRAY!!! Bullet is the first I've seen on here to say something right. Spreading a coil apart destroys its ability to do what a coil does. A stupid watt meter will read just about any RF that passes through it. Yep, even harmonics of your primary frequency. A watt meter is a usefull tool as long as you know what freq's are going through it. The cap. and resistor trick does work pretty good. And if you change to a 2sc1969 you have to change some resistor values in the driver and final circuit, as well as changing the coupling capacitance between the two. Without doing that a 1969 will probably do less than the stock final.
