Just was wondering if there were any tricks or tweak mods for this virgin radio I just picked up. I believe it's got the 858PLL in it. I already know how to get freqs. Was looking for more towards the modulation department. To get some swing on it......Any pointers from all you techs would be appreciated......Thanks........

Nice radio from my distant past. If you can leave it virgin, all the better. But if you wanna make good use of it, do it right. There's a lot hack mods for this radio. I suggest you find an old Redco Digi Scan or an Expander 1000 Digital Programmer. These can now be had for $30~$40 tops nowadays. One of these boxes will get you the most channels you can get from an old uPD858 chip. It'll also save you from adding 5/10kc switches. For ALC, just a tad. And if you don't have an amp, adjust the power to no more than 18 watts max. Of course unlock the clarifier, stick to 5kc swings either way. Some folks get carried away and go 15. Gimme a day, and I'll see if I can dig up my modifications info I wrote up from 20 years ago. Surf the net, and see what you can find. But do a lot of reading and comparisons 1st.
Here's a one url, and I've studied the info. It's trust worthy (I still suggest a digi scan box though); http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Port/1158/858mod.htm

Hey Stanley,
Thanks for info. I posted that question a while back and didn't get any responce from anyone...I bought this radio from Ebay for 100.00 bucks. Can't complain. I thought it was virgin, but it's not it has two toggle switches in back of radio for freqs and a varaible knob on back as well for AMC. Screaming little radio. I noticed the inside looked similiar two my old President Grant...I would like to get a Redco Digi scan though. Not for my Navaho, but for my Cobra 148gtl. If you know anybody outthere with a digiscan for sale let me know.......Thanks again for responce.....73's

No problems. This week was heavy for work, I didn't get a chance yet to look up my records on the mods. But glad to hear you are going to take the digi scan route. Actually, the Grant is similar to the 457, but with some major improvements. The 148 is also similar to the 457 and grant too. There were two main players in the late 70's and early 80's. One was Uniden (who never sold their own radios, just chassis like the 858) and the other was Cybernet, where the famous "02A PLL" chassis came from. Both manufactures sold to different brands, like cobra, courier, president, etc. Cybernet were mostly the Hy-Gains, and the now rare JIL Citizen label exclusive to Canada. I have many radios in my collection from each brand/manufacturer of these two players from back then. Now I see Uniden bought out President, and Cybernet has vanished(?). Hey, heads up Snapperhead, there is a Digi Scan 400 on eBay right now, but it's being sold with a CObra 142. There is also a Frequency Scan II being sold with a Cobra 139XLR... Too bad the people selling them don't know anything about radios (estate sales), so don't know how to detach these gems... They'd make more money that way! Most of the digi scans that show up on eBay are attached to radios and sold by estate liquidators who know nothing about the vintage. Later....
