Ranger 2980 need to know the mod,and any thing else to perk it up.Also the freq counter has gone out,a week after it came out of the box.Someone said bulb,does anyone really know?I need help fast.Thanks. |

Freq counter failed? Common problem with the 6-digit counters in those and other radios that use them.
Freq Mod
Remove the solder bridge/short from between PIN 16 of IC7 and PIN 11 of IC5.
or...
Remove the four (4) 100 ohm 1/8 watt resistors that connect PIN 15 of IC7 to PINS 2,4,6, and 15.
Mod VR14
AM High Power VR13
AM Low Power VR16
SSB Power VR12

HH,
Check the 5-Volt regulator in the counter circuit sometimes they fail. Regulator looks like a final transistor. The LCD will burn out if supplied with too much voltage. Be grounded if you are working in that area with tools or soldering equipment.
