The last one of those someone carried in here was used/abused. It flunked a high-voltage breakdown test. The vacuum was contaminated, commonly referred to as a "gassy" tube. If it were installed in an amplifier and keyed, there would have been a loud "POW". I suggest either 1) using a tube you can replace for under $1000, or 2) getting this one tested BEFORE you spend the money to put it on the air. If you got this tube cheap, maybe that's all it was worth to the previous owner. It might be good now, but if it goes "poof" after a week's use, you'll be wishing you used a less-exotic tube that costs less per watt.

Triple 9,

I know many people who would be willing to build that amplifier for you. However, you need to remember that in a tube type amplifier, the tube is the 'expendable' component of that unit. The most important part of any tube amplifier is the power supply. After you have spent more money for the components to build that amplifier than 5 of those tubes are worth brand new, you would change your mind. This is the same as having a new set of tires and asking someone to build a car for them.

I also suggest you stay clear of the large glass tubes unless you are the type of operator who can resist abusing them. Every CBer I have had contact with believes that you tune an amplifier for maximum output. That is not true. If you treat your 4-1000 that way, you will be replacing tubes very often.

I operate a broadcast unit that is on the air 24/7 using 4 of those glass tubes, and I get about 1.5 to 2 years use out of a set. When the tubes are pulled, they are still useable, but not as efficient as new.

If you still want an amplifier built around your tube, kindly ask the forum master to share my office phone number with you and I can put you in touch with the right people. However, keep in mind, they will not build this without a valid amateur callsign.
