if you don't run power is there any benefit to lowering the dead key? thanks |

It depends if you have a radio that has a good amount of swing on the meter. Lowering a dead key will give you more modulation and thus making your radio a little louder. I have a cobra 29LTD classic and it has a mod kit in it that lets me deadkey a 1/2 watt and swings to about 23 watts. When I run a linear, man, talk about swing. It's almost a little too much and usually over modulated but that's what the mic gain is for. What kind of radio are you running?? |

it's not about the power, modulation makes the big difference. Just don't overmodulate. |

Running with no amp it is most desirable to have the carrier (dead key) 1/4 of what the peak power is. With the 949/959 that's usually 3-4w. |

dont forget to give dead key its due, there is a reason they call it a carrier wave you know, it carries the modulation, as well as keeps the modulation within the assigned frequency, i recommend more carrier if your going to run without an amp, but you dont have to, also, if you run large enough guage of wire, you wont notice an increase in modulation by lowering the carrier, that is unless the radio is at peak modulation, though i do also recommend not to have it more than half of the peak unless you have a fan in there! anyway, its really common to find them that low, they last longer too. |

If your at a long distance, lowering the dead key too much makes you harder to copy. All you will hear is the carrier peaks. Some stations go too far with this in order to see a meter swing. |

I agree with you 409. People used to not worry about it that much. I realize that too much carrier can kill the modulation but error either way is still error. mikefromms |
