How can I put a switch on the amp so I can run low power into different amps?

You mean so you can forget to flip the switch to 'low' and blow the holy devil out of small amps? Sorry, couldn't resist.

If you turn the radio upside-down and remove the lower cover, look at the rear-left (your left) corner of the circuit board for a small tan-colored plug with a black and brown wire coming out of it. It's just to the left of the "mirror board". The next problem is with the wire colors. One is black, the other brown. Trouble is, they used brown for "hot" in some radios, and they used the black one for "hot" on others. The wire closest to the OUTSIDE of the radio is the one that keys the amplifier when the radio transmits. Clip this wire and see that the power is now under 20 watt peaks. If it still does normal (100-plus) power, you clipped the wrong one.

If you clipped the right one, disconnect the power cord and install a toggle switch. The wires probably won't reach the switch, so you'll have to lap-solder splice extra length onto the wires to reach the switch. The "Off" side of the switch will provide "barefoot" mode, usually around 16 to 18 Watts PEP. The "On" side of the switch will put you back on "high side".

One more small thought. Simply turning a small amplifier "Off" will not allow you to leave it in line AND run the 2970 at full power. We have seen a number of roached keying ciruits in small amplifiers. They thought that if it was off, they could run a few hundred watts "straight through". All small amplifiers have keying circuits that are still hooked in the line, even with the power OFF. Anything more than "barefoot drive" will usually roach them, even with the power disconnected. Take that amp out of line before going back to "High Side" on the 2970.

Thats sounds easy enough. I'm assuming the wire that I'm switching is the hot one to key the amp and the other is ground? Thanks for the help!!!

Yep, that's the deal. They run both the hot and ground on that pair of wires that disappear under the linear shield cover. Switching the ground side won't put the amplifier on standby, only the hot side will do that. On all of them that I have seen, the wire closest to the outer edge of the main p.c. board is the hot one, whichever color they may have used on your radio.
