Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone can let me know if TS 830S can be modified for all full TX/RX to cover 25-30 mhz? I have not been able to find any info if this radio can be converted. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Cheers
Andrew

It can be done, but you won't find the mod at the QRZ site, or any other popular mod site, either. I know a mod that will get you 11 meters, but the display will read 2 MHZ higher than the actual frequency. (If you are on channel 13, 27.115, it will display 29.115, and so on). Dean's World Wide CB Forum has a thread with the mod posted, but if you can't find it, let me know and I can point you in the right direction.

Hi there,
Thanks for that info, yes qrz.com has squat about full coverage conversion! I didn't think a ham site would though, eh?. I saw a pic of radio somewhere and it had digital display actually showing 27.450! But any help would be greatly appreciated to convert it properly. Is there any place that can do it profesionally that anyone knows of? Hope someone can help!!!!
Cheers

Ihe TS-830 was NOT built as a General Coverage HF transceiver. It was one of the early Kenwoods built that had a PLL set-up. Everything was solid state except for the twin 6146 vacuum tube finals. A well put together combination. It's receiver sensitivity and clarity is just out of this world. And the sideband audio has that full throated, real FM clean sound to it as long as you don't use a high pitch crappy D-104 on it. It was designed for a dynamic mic element. The audio always had that in-your-face "Heil" sound to it. Really mellow and nice to listen to. But, too bad it was just "Band Selectable" and not made General Coverage.

I could never get mine to go below 26.500. "Or somewhere around there. I don't really remember". However, it WILL cover all of the CB 11 meter band from there up to 10 meters with a jump on the PLL board and a spst switch used in combination with the 500 Khz VFO shift switch.

Another way of doing it was to change the 10Meg crystal to a 8 Meg and everything would move down 2 Mhz. Impedence and capacitance are very critical. Crystal specs have to be the same as the 10 Meg crystal or you won't get any oscillation. And as Highlander stated in his well written post, the frequency display will be off by 2 Mhz. That really doesn't create a problem for most people because you don't even need to know any new math to figure it out. My wife is good at taking away 2 from everything. Also, there is a mod to change the frequency read-out but it isn't worth the time and trouble.

If it had been General Coverage, I would still be using mine to this day. Damn, what a great radio it was in it's day.

If you need the mod for it, email me.

Yes I can. Give me a couple days to dig it up for you. I'm sure I still have it. I never throw stuff like that away.

Hi all,
I found this old thread and was wondering if anyone has the 11m mod for the TS-830S? Could you post it here or send it to me?
Thanks for any info!
Scott
