Can I run this Maco 300 without the 2ohm/10watt wirewound power resistor (cement style). I order one from RF parts, but it never came. They gave me credit line! Does anyone know. I know there was a MACO tech that I was talking to before! email me ambaff51@juno.com

It's a surge resistor, meant to limit the tremendous burst of current to fill those big filter caps up from "empty" when the power switch is clicked on. It also serves as a sort of high-voltage "fuse" if a tube or a filter capacitor shorts out. Best I can recall, a 20 or 25-watt resistor holds up better. If the one in there is blown, there is probably a reason. Check for shorted rectifiers or leaky filter caps with a swollen 'zit' on the end cap. If you don't fix the problem that popped the resistor, you should buy plenty of them.

Hosfelt electronics in Steubenville, OH at www.hosfelt.com should have them in the NTE brand, or possibly others.

The guy you asked about uses the handle "Maco Tech" and has a web site at http://www.freewebs.com/skunkworks/main.htm
There should be an e-mail addy there that is up-to-date.
