Hi there, I am looking for the extra channel mod for this great radio. I know it's pretty easy BUT would like a link, or info, to be double sure! Cheers Andrew 739 (an aussie in US of A!) |

You'll lose your auto repeater function and a couple other features but it is a great radio. |

Here it is: Icom 706mkIIg mod The standard cya disclaimers apply to the following: Icom IC706mkIIg mod: Wide band transmit mod for the IC706mkIIg requires removal of diode D.2030. Remove top cover to access main board. Locate IC chip 4052C-8713. Looking at the chip and reading the number from left to right, look just left of the chip to locate 11 solder pads running up and down. Diode D.2030 was the tenth diode from the top of the solder pads on (USA Version) radio. Remove diode. This modification opens up transmit on HF, VHF, and UHF bands. This mod is courtesey of another ham site!!! Hooty |

Though not labled, I believe diode "D.2030" is the only diode present on the bank of solder pads. |

Is there any way to do this mod without losing the repeater function?? I like using 2 metre and 70 cm repeaters!! I read somewhere that doing a CPU reset would enable this function once mod was done? Anyone give me the heads up on whether repeater function will work after diode 2030 is taken out? OR could you enable a switching system to either have diode in or out etc??I know it would be finicky to solder up BUT that could work, I think. cheers Andrew |

You won't lose your repeater function. Just the feature which automatically has the correct offset for the particular US repeater frequencies when you have the respective freqs on the display. After the mod you have to tell the radio that there is an offset. Once you program your repeaters into memory you won't have to mess with it anyway to operate on your repeaters. It is a feature you will hardly miss unless you are on a long road trip or something. |
