Hello all, I have had this Palomar skipper for about 5 years and it has sat in a closet. when I bought it the tech had told me the unit was modded to do a 900watt deadkey. well I finnaly got it out and started using it after i tuned it it would do about 600. I noticed one tube doesnt have the purple glow and gets real hot. it has 4 GE 8950's and I need to know if anyone has some tubes that they will sell me or can tell me where to get them. I have found some places on the net but the cheapest was $90 a tube. PLEASE HELP!!
thanks

The 8950 is not made anymore. You can still get new old stock tubes at a premium. Also I had a tech rewire and retube with modern russian tubes a old Skipper for me last year.73's

I would have it rewired for 6 volt tubes. You can pick them up NOS for $10-12 ea. on Ebay any day. I've done this to 5 or 6 of them and the output stays the same. Let me know if you are interested and I can help you get it done.

Joe, I am intrested in doing the rewire you talked about. But this amp has been changed a bit to do more power, will I be able to do 900watts or so with the amp after the rewire? And most of all will it be clean I dont want to splatter all over. E-mail me some info, I am very intrested in this thanks Suicidejockey@cbhandle.com

I have owned several of these old amps and have yet to ever see more than 400 watts out of one.I'm not saying that you aren't getting what you say you are ,I just don't know how it's possible. When I had my last one rewired and retubed the best it would do was 350 watts.

Vernonott: I have two of these amps one is all factory and does about 350 watts. My other one if you look inside it is totaly different inside, and when it keys up it is alot quiter. Dont know what was done to it but it is swinging up to about 800 watts now. I know if I had new tubes it would do alot better! If anyone has any tubes (8950's) for sale please email me at SuicideJockey@cbhandle.com . thanks for reading!

A educated radioman like Hamcber can easily figure out what a tube is capable of.I don't see four 8950 tubes doing 800 watts,at least they've never done so for me.73's

Along the lines of what Joe said, I had one where I changed the transformer to a 24-volt one and dropped in 23JS6a's.

don't know if you knew, but you can import 8950 style tubes, a company called sovtek, they make alot of tubes for guitar amps, but they also make replacement tubes for alot of old styles.

I have a bone stock skipper 300. Does anyone know who can trick this out. Are there tubes I can use to improve power out?
