All I know about the radio is that they got it approved to sell by taking a PLL chip that SHOULD no longer be legal (MC145106) for CB and encasing it into epoxy potting compound. I'm still waiting for someone (else) to work this one out. Ain't found it yet. 73 |

im sure it wont take a rocket scientist to use a hot air blower to melt the epoxy away. they did the same things to some 2510 `s sometime ago when they were being made . |

If a qualified tech wants to tackle this project I would be willing to send them a guinea pig radio.E-mail me. 73 Carmen n2yqq@yahoo.com |

hi 307, let us know if you get one to modify and see if you can figure out a clarifier conversion for it as well. they are nice looking radios but i keep hearing that they are just like the cobra 148gtl. i dont think so....lol |

NPC-RC for Cherokee NR-150 The NR Cherokee-100, in my opinion, is nothing more than a futuristic Cobra 29. And the 150 is a 29 w/SSB. They are far better than the Cobra 29 ever thought of being or ever will be. Plus, both the Cherokee-100 and 150 takes nicely to a NPC mod. But then, that's only My opinion. Here is the NPC mod for the Cherokee-150 if anyone is interested. 1. Remove the internal heat sink by unsoldering the final along with the heat sensing diode wires, (D-88) which is held against the final within the white nylon shroud over the final. Take out the 2 screws that hold the heat sink to the chassis. Then using the factory screws and white plastic washer, mount the final to the chassis using the factory hole. Be sure to use the insulator and a liberal amount of heat sink compound. Make sure that the diode is inside the white nylon shroud or epoxy it to the final as a last resort. 2. Remove L-36 near VR-20. L-36 is a 2 watt resistor with a ferrite bead on one of its wire leads. Replace L-36 with a plain wire and the bead from the resistor. 3. While you are in this area of the board, you will see a two pronged support for the mirror board at TP-7. Unsolder and remove the support. Using the hole closest to the rear of the radio at TP-7 on the bottom of the board, run at least 14 guage insulated wire from the hole to the emitter of the AM regulator transistor, TR-51. Make sure the wire at the TP-7 end does not touch the mirror board. 4. Remove TR-50 and replace it with a 2SA1869 with the flat side of the transistor towards the inside of the radio. If you can't find a 2SA1869, a 2SA1012 can be used in its place. 5. Remove C-189 and lay it aside to use later. Prepare a 1N4001 diode by clipping the banded cathode end to 1/8" long. Prepare a 100 ohm 1/4 watt resistor in the same manner and solder the short ends together. Install the diode/resistor combination in the holes vacated by C-189 with the resistor in the REAR hole and the long wire of the diode in the front hole. Solder C-189 on the bottom of the board to the wire leads from the resistor/diode combination that you just installed. Now turn VR-13 fully counter clockwise. 6. Remove R-237 and replace it with a 100 ohm 1/2 watt resistor. 7. This is optional. Remove R-249 if you have a spectrum analyzer AND know how to use a mic gain correctly. Otherwise leave it in place. You won't notice much performance difference either way and leaving it in place will result in cleaner modulation. 8. Set dead key for 2 watts. You should see at least 20 watts peak power. Jeff, kc0gxz. PS::: I did not write this. A Ham and radio tech friend of mine in New Mexico sent this one to me from his shop. I have performed this NPC mod 3 times now on the Cherokee-150 and it seems to work quite well. The NPC mod is almost the same for the Cherokee-100 but there are a few differences. No mirror board for one thing. If interested, Email me. kc0gxz@aol.com |
