With cover off radio, find vr17(am mod) and vr19 (low power). These vr's are marked on the board. To the left of these vr's are a group of 6 vertically surface mounted resistors, caps and diodes. Starting on the left, counting 1,2,3,4,5,6....the third resistor is r301. I can't remember where I got the component layout, maybe the rci website. But it sure does make things easier to find. Wish I could copy and post. Good luck, Hooty

I have an RCI2970 (non-DX model). Does anyone recommend cutting the limiter in this one? Also, has anyone tried using the 2879 finals in place of the 2290s?

What is the radio capable of in terms of output when peaked (AM/SSB)?

Thanks!

431ct

If done corectly, the 2970 has capabilities of well over 200 watts PEP on both A/M and SSB. But, a few modifications need to be done first in order for it to work correctly and for the audio to remain clean in both modes.

As far as changing the amplifiers' finals, there's only around a 20 watt difference (if even that much) between the two power devices. Not enough there for anyone to ever see or hear a difference.

And, in my way of thinking, the radio doesn't have enough heatsink as it is for the two 2290s that are in it now. Yes, it works, but it also heats up very quickly.

HEY WAIT ONE MINUTE...

YOU ARE CORRECT AND I AM WRONG...

Q-43 IS THE MOD LIMITER, FINALLY GOT AROUND TO PLAYING WITH THE RADIO, AND IT WAS ON MY LIST TO CHECK TO MAKE SURE...

YOU ARE CORRECT, IT IS Q-43........ Still wouldn't suggest it being removed....

As for the 2970 non dx versinon, still wouldn't recomend it touching it.. Thier are other things that can be done, and every now and again when you clip the mod limiters, it will cause you severe problems on ssb.. Alot of times people will not be able to understand what you are saying..

DID I MENTION... Q-43 IS CORRECT!!!

(just noticed this isn't the post that mentioned Q43, but it still fits here real good)

Weakeststation,

How about putting your Pow/Mia Banner in the Picture area of your profile.

Been trying to find one myself to add to my profile.

It looks Good!

Pulling a limiter in ANY radio in my opinion is the worst thing you can do. It is a last resort you should do only if you can't get the radio to modulate decently any way else. The 2970 is a good radio from what I have seen. If you tune it up right and set it at 80-95% modulation you'll be great to go. Every single unit I've seen peaked at that spec sounds fantastic. Not overdriven at all. (I've seen 5 so far) I worked on 2 and a Tech here that I help out has done 3.

Look for R291 and see if it has been removed or 1 side cut.

My tune up specs show ADJUST VR-14 (AMC)or CUT R291.

Hope this help's.

Dear Cm3885,

I was not reffering to your post on the 2970 limiter question. I was posting in response to another poster here by the nick 431ct who posted a bit further up. Sorry for the confusion.
