Hello all,
Trying to decide which amp to get, I am mainly using icoms that put out 100 watts, so I am wondering if the high drive model will deliver a bit more oompth compared to the low drive model. Also, there are 1 less tube in the high drive etc, but , does anyone know how they compare and does one give a better consistant output than the other? I read the review from tech 808 about the low drive BUT I really need some insight, or experience, from someone who has the high drive model. They are not cheap so I want to spend my $$ wisely, I hope someone can help.
Cheers
Andrew

andrew,

if your dead set on a klv amp id go with the 1000p

but your money would be spent more wisely on a real ham amplifier like a drake L4b,heathkit sb 200 or 220,ameritrons, yeasue 2100 ect ect.

thier built much better, much more rugged and transmitt tubes last forever compared to sweep tubes, and will they'll coast all day long at what that klv amp grunts at.

and you can get them in good working order cheeper than that klv amp from ham swap meets or ham websites that have a swap page on them.

el509's are good rugged little sweep tubes but there no 3-500zg,3cx1200,8877.

id venture to bet the 1000p cant reach the 1400 watts pep ive heard claimed.

el509's only have a rated plate dissipation of 35 watts. take the 900volts x 100ma= 90watts input x 60% eff.=54 real watts per tube x 1.414= 76 peak watts x 1.414 = 107.9 pep per tube.

so 5 of these is about 539.8 watts pep. and id venture a guess thats what my bird would read on one on these amps. my modified sb220 cruses at 1400 pep on a bird 43p and my phantom 500 does 700 pep on this same meter will do 900+ on a dosey.(just as a comparison)

the "ham amps" are buy far the better buy .
