Hey Jim,
I recall you have the 706 and were getting a KL 500 to use with it. Just a question, I have the same gear and wondered how it works etc (have not got my mobile set-up running yet). Any tips you can give (or anyone else , please chip in) on combo? How low did you set your output on 706, ie level 1? And, (when I went to school you could never start a sentence with "And".. times change eh?) how was the output power, and on-air reports.
Hear from you soon (or anyone else with this combo).
Cheers
Andrew

Hey there Andrew:

Took awhile for me to find the "sweet spot" for my antenna, radio and KL-500. I find that level '3' in the 706 (3 1/2W) seems to be about right for my DXing. I could put alot more into the amp, according to the spec's up to 30W?, but I don't run it that high for two reasons: One is it keeps it cooler, two is the amperage is too high for my power supply (35Amp PS) beyond stage 4 in the amp anyway.

My power output is all on for SSB for the KL-500:

Stage 1=175W (30% of the time)
Stage 2=200W (70% of the time & Xlnt Reports)
Stage 3=225W
Stage 4=250/275W

I have never used stages 5 or 6 because the amperage exceeds my PS as stated above.

I sure LOVE that radio tho! Still learning all of the many aspects of the DSP and noise reduction buttons.

Hey Jim,
Thanks for reply, thought you had the KL 500 in the mobile though, sorry about that! Yes they are awesome radios for the money, got mine for 729, with no tax and free shipping. I have my tech ticket too, so instead on having a seperate, HF, 6 mtre, 2mtre and 70cm rig , that has 100watts etc, it would cost a bloody fortune!! So $729 is a great price. Got a KL 1000P on the way, keen to test that combo out, you should look at something like that yourself, and put the 500 in the car?. Hey, you got the area to run a bit more oomph eh!
Okay mate, thanks for the reply, I appreciate it big time.
Cheers

Hey Jim,
Man, i got the KL 1000P the other day...wow!!! You have to get one for the 706 on your home base as it kicks severe butt!! All reports I get are superior punchy audio and signal punches through the pile-ups (even using my crappy half wave dipole 8 ft off ground!) Beats using a power supply and mobile amp in a base set up. Put the KL 500 in your vehicle and be done with it!!ha ha.
Just thought you'd like my experience, email me if you want any more info, price etc.
Cheers

60"s:

Thanks for the feedback! That's one of the features I love about this Forum. Finding out AHEAD of time what does and doesn't work....

What settings are you using on the KL-1000? and what settings are you using on the 706? Different than my 3 1/2 watts in?

AND.... what amperage is it using at different levels? I KNOW..... QUESTIONS QUESTIONS....:-)

Hey Jim,
Okay, I got the KL 1000P model!! You can drive it with up to 60 watts on AM and the full 100-120 on SSB. So, I am running the 706 at full power and man this combo SCREAMS!! It plugs straight into the wall power socket, no need for extra power supply etc. It has 4 valves and the inbuilt SWR meter and output power meter are spot on. I am getting on highest level of amp 500 watts dk and 700 peak on AM, on SSB peaking over 1000 watts, averaging around 900-950 watts talking normally ie not whistling etc. I am using the SM 20 base mic on rig and all reports are 100%. You know some set-ups you hear with an amp sound almost unhuman, and you can hear the overdriven power straining signal they put out, that overshadows a good CLEAN audio punch. One thing, the 1000P is a Giant Monster, the 706 looks like a baby next to it!! With your antenna set-up, the 1000P would make your station thunder out, if you love the KL 500 now, you will not believe the 1000P!
Cheers mate
