I need to know all the adjustments for this radio.
EG power, mod, frequency (both AM and SSB), meters, unlock clarifier, super mod, and whatever else someone can come up with except PLL channel mods, and talkback.
Also where could I find a 110 AC power cord. Rat Shack doesn't have them. The guy there says they haven't made base station CB's in over 20 years. I laughed when he said that.

I had found the clarifier mod in the CB Tune up Manual Master Edition Vol. 2 so I no longer need that.
Thank you for the SSB power adjustment. This radio puts out more power on AM than SSB.
I still need the freq. adjustments. Also where is the final & driver located? I am thinking of replacing them with hotter ones.
I still need a power cord.

Rebel:The driver and final that Uniden installed new are as good as it gets, I have a TRC-457, this is the same radio as the 458. I have a close friend who is a Realistic collector, I'll ask him if he wants to part with maybe a spare cord he might have. The TRC-490 to my knowing was the last sideband base put on the market by Radio Shack so the sales person you spoke with could be correct on the 20 years, the TRC-458 is of the late 70s vintage. The TRC-449,457, and 458 as well as some President, Cobra and Robyn radios have some of the best audio circuits to produce super loud transmit audio. My bone stock TRC-449 that I run in the car has modulation that's out of this world, so I've been told, yes it has a power microphone on it. Yankee

Rebel: I have E-mail my friend on the power cord. Now on the NEC-1306 driver and NEC-1307 final that was installed new in your 458 by Uniden can and will tune up to about 30-35 watts on sideband,the correct way to tune the final if your not using an amp. is to on am dead key with no audio and a good watt meter adjust VR8 to maximum on channel 20 then back it off some say about 4-5 watts, now on sideband also on channel 20 with a steady AHH in a normal voice, tune CT7 also to maximum, then just back it off a little. the NEC-1307 is a 35 watt final. if you are running an Amp. drive no more than 3 watts on AM. VR-6 is the microphone gain set it to maximum, if you are using a power microphone, you work with the gain on it after you have turned up VR-6. I may be an old goat of 66 years old, but I still know how to tune the good old sidebanders from the 70s. This tune-up is the only thing that has been done to my Realistic TRC-449 in my mobile,Which by the way is the same radio as the TRC-457 and 458. Hope this tuning info. is of some help to you. I sure would be interested to see the site where you got the specs claiming that the Nec-1307 has capabilities of 35 watts of RF power.
To me, that spells 60-70 watts of output power for the radios with a pair of 2312 RF finals. Your claimed 35 watts is a lot of power for a single final radio.
Just curious.

Hi Jeff, I didn't see it on any web site, the first factory installed NEC-1307s did swing upwards to 35 watts on sideband after an electronics engineer with a masters degree in electronics (design engineer), put his golden touch on the older sideband rigs, altough he did add a few components the final was still NEC-1307 and the driver Nec-1306, I wish I still had the Cobra 139XLR he did for me. Altough I do know where it is in Florida, after a long trip from back home where he lives in upstate NY, to Georgia and into the hands of the new proud owner then on to where he lives in Florida. 73, Carl (yankee) |

I don't know about the watts being that high, but if you got one hang on to it. About the power cord go to a good hardware store they still use the same type of cords on table top mixers and there is a lot of radios that are AC-DC use the same power cords. So get out there and look around. RADIO SHACK DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY TALKING ABOUT, the guy that you talked to most likely don't know what you were talking about anyway. |

I am still looking for that power cord.
also new thing
I have to have my am dead key around 1-1.5 to keep it from swinging backwards. It doesn't swing forward tho.
I get around 4 watts on SSB.
I am thinking final.
What do you think? |
