Hi Hams
,
I purchased a homemade 6 pill linear amplifier from ebay. It has 6 Motorola rsf3749 transistors. I took it to my local CB repair shop for a bench test and they told me that it needed a new relay and new transistors. They also offered me $25 dollars for the linear. My question is how do I know the pills are bad? Are they trying to rip me off? What input would I need to drive this amplifier and what output should I expect? Is there a cross reference replacement for these transistors if I have to purchase 6 more? The unit is a mobile amplifier.

Thanks for all your help in advance.

You should have checked it out yourself first just to see if it was working or not. 4 watts will more that likely be enough to drive it for testing purposes.

Personally, I think you may have something pretty good there. You just have to ask yourself why does your tech would want it so badly if it needs so much work. For all you know, that may have been a perfectly good working linear when you received it. I'm not saying your tech is trying to put the screws to you but since you didn't try it out before you took it to him, you'll never know.

The average price for working used mobile linears is usually around 50 to 60 cents per watt. Sometimes more, sometimes less depending on condition. Brand new mobile linears are very common, easy to get and pretty inexpensive to buy these days. Just check Coppers prices and you'll see what I mean.

Tsl001,along the lines Jeff said,I have never trusted a tech that says he will take it off your hands because"he can use it for parts"
