Ok. I love this radio escpecially after having to clean mud and water out of the thing and it works. Next thing is i am stupid when it comes to tweaking and tuning these thing so when you give me instructions your gonna have to spell 'em out for me.
-------------------------------------------------
"Taz's Instructions"
Step 1. Melt the wax or epoxy seal with soldering iron. Also make sure your alignment tool fits well in the slot.
Step 2. VR-4 MODULATION
Step 3. Tune for max L14, L13, and L12 for max swing on channel 20, AM
Step 4. If possible inject 600 hz tone into mic, or say auuuudio, while tuning for max.
Step 5. Gently spread apart L12 coil while monitoring on meter for max swing.

MODULATION

Parts Required:
NOTE:"The radio should be properly peaked before attempting the following instructions."

1- 220uf electrolytic capacitor 10-16 v
1- 100 to 200 ohm resistor 1/4 or 1/2 watt
Step 1. Unsolder jp6 near the final. Step 2. Solder a 220uf capacitor with the negative facing the final where jp6 was removed Step 3. Solder a 100 ohm resistor across the capacitor leads on the solder side of the board.
-------------------------------------------------
Ok. Modulations? WTF is it? Step 4 what is it and what in the world is it doing? The wax/epoxy is that one the Vr-4 spot? Swing? OK NOW Part 2. All the soldering what is recommend and what aint. Is there any special stuff i need to know. Oh aside from how to work the solder gun. :-) Just a quick thought the speaker on the inside of the cb does it have negative and positive power leads on it or are those just some type of audio leads. Ask because i might be able to find a small computer fant to throw in it to add for cooling :-) Unless ya'll dont recommend it. Thanks in advance.

Maverick20,

WELCOME TO THE COPPER FORUM!

Now for your question,

#1 ~ First you will need a GOOD SWR/WATT / MODULATION Meter.

#2 ~ Then you will CAREFULLY Melt the Wax inside the VR 4 Tower and use a toothpick to remove the wax. Being very careful to NOT Break it.

#3 ~ Then you will need a Plastic Radio Alignment tool DO NOT USE A METAL SCREWDRIVER!

#4 ~ Then Very carefully adjust the Modulation until you see 90 to 95 % Modulation on your Meter.

If the Tuning Coil does not move DO NOT FORCE IT & BE VERY CAREFUL that you do not break it.

#4 ~ Swing means watch your Meter and adjust the radio for the Watt Meter Needle to achieve Maximum FORWARD Swing on the Meter.

#5 ~ If you are new to working on radios and have any doubt, get someone who has done it before to help you and show you how.

It is very easy to ruin a good radio if you are not sure of what you are doing and how to do it.

Copper has many good books that will help you a lot to learn about working on radios and doing minor modifications correctly.
