hello, i am new to this forum. so i'll start by saying hi.
now my question, i just bought a new virage vx-129cn night talker 40 channel cb. it is made by ranger. i am trying to figure out how to drop the dead key and still have it swing to full power. i want to do this because i'm running a 125 amp with it. the stock 4 watts is driving it too hard and it's warming up a bit. i dont want to touch the radio untill i get some advice.

Hi Rich,
Your Night Talker is easily adjusted for what you are wanting to do. A decent power/modulation meter is highly recommended. Remove the lower cover, being careful with the speaker wires. [best to unplug the connector and set the cover off to the side] Using a proper alignment tool (you can get a set from Radio shack, they call it a TV alignment tool set, about 5 bucks}. L-14 is the adjustment for dead key wattage. The high power limit is L-17. [Use a little caution with these, the core is a slug made of powdered iron and if you crack one, it can ruin it.] To get the swing you want, V-4 is the modulation adjustment. You should be able to get it to do what you want it to do. I have a friend who has a couple of these radios and I set up the one he uses with a amp. It does a great job! The other one is run barefoot, so the dead key is about 5 watts. It also does a great job. [ Note: I am not a expert tech and cannot be responsible for the results of any of the above. Results may vary with the skill of the person doing the adjustments.]

Daleguyton,
I just ran into your post while browsing the forums. Haven't had any experience with the TR 127, but it may share the same basic board as the Virage. Check the board for the designation. The Virage is: "EPT012910Z" ( yours may be EPT012710Z or something similar). If it has V4 (mod) L14 (power) and L-17 (high power limit), it should adjust the same way. Note the original positions of the adjusters (or take a photo of them)in case you have to set them back to the original settings. Best advice is to go to the ranger site and see if they have a schematic for that model and go from there.
