Does anyone know which resistor in this radio is the one you lift and install the 1N4001 diode to? Also you guys know the trick where you remove or lift the leg of R249 in the Galaxy radios. Think it's called the audio limiter? Which resistor in the 2970 is the limiter? This is one of the older ones that has the amber/red/orange whatever color it is, lights in the faceplate. I've converted it over to blue and I'd like to know of any mods for this radio... Thanks

Therealporkchop, Check out the Modification list located under Tools Tools Mic. Wiring Frequency Chart CB & Ham Lingo Modification List I have most of the Tune Up information listed there for the Ranger 2970. Hope this helps. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Thanks Lon. I appreciate that, but I am wondering if there is a swing mod for this radio or not? I don't see it there.. Oh yeah, somebody has a 535 power mic wired to this radio, would it sound better with another mic?

Therealporkchop, Sorry never heard of a swing mod for one. You already have High and Low power adjustments in it. Never used a 535 on any our rangers but have used the DM-452 mics with great success. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN

I have a mod for the 2950 & 2970 that I use I will send it to you as soon as I get my new scanner in place.it uses a 914 diode and a 50 to 100 ohm resister on the foil side of the board.the web sight I got if off of is not working right now or I could copy the picture to you.its is on 2 legs of the 754 transister.the same as the other boards use it.instead of pulling the resister up just solder it on the foil side of the board |

Alright, that is cool sounds good. I do have to say though, and this will cause a bunch of raised eyebrows and questions, along with comments... I have my deadkeys set a 3 low, 10 high. Another guy set this radio up and this is just how I got it from another HAM. The radio on the PEP scale swings to 150w. On the RMS side it swings to about 40w. Does this sound right to you guys? The modulation swings to 100+% and stays there. I've been told the radio sounds very good and is very loud. I don't see anything that has been changed on the radio and the only thing I see is where someone cut something out of circuit up around the where the mic would be on a standard radio. The reason I am hunting for these mods is I have a friend that has a 48T and I've seen it swing to 200w. Plus I know the Galaxy radios has the audio limiter in them you can lift. I am thinking that the 48T and the 2970 are similiar and I'd like to fix my radio like the 48T. The HAM I got it from has used it on 10 meters and side bands and it sounded great. He got excellent reports, but I figure the mod limiter is what that has been cut out. I've seen where doing this causes the radio to wobble on SSB. But this radio has got excellent reports, so undoubtly it hasn't effected this radio. Does anyone know which resistor in this radio serves the same purpose as R249 in the Galaxy radios? And I'd like to have that file Sonoma as soon as you get things straight. Oh yeah, Lon, it doesn't seem to matter where you set the high/low knob, the radio seems to swing the same. Is this right? |

Yeah I got it. Thanks. I tried it, and seems that something is already done to the radio, cause it didn't change anything. I don't know what is up with this raido..having problems and will post the run down later... |
